Recap / Teen Titans Go S 7 E 16 Polly Ethylene And Tara Phthalate

Go To

While at the beach, the Titans see a lot of trash wash ashore, and meet a pair of child-sized "magical molecules" called Polyethylene (Polly) and Terephthalate (Tara) that teach them about how to recycle plastic.

Tropes:

  • Continuity Cameo: When the Titans manage to recycle all of the plastic into a garden at the end of the episode, there's a scarecrow that looks exactly like Batman's foe The Scarecrow.
  • Don't Celebrate Just Yet: The final scene of the episode is the Teen Titans celebrating that they've managed to recycle all of the world's recyclable plastic and have saved the world...and then pans out to show all of the other ecological damage in the world, such as a starving polar bear on a shrinking ice block and a sinking ship leaking oil into the ocean.
  • Freudian Excuse: The motivation of Major A.B.S. is to get revenge on the world because he was made out of (and named after) non-recyclable plastic and just thrown away when his previous owner grew too old for toys instead of repurposed.
  • Fun with Acronyms: The episode's villain is a sentient toy with huge abs whose name is Major Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (A.B.S.).
  • Green Aesop: The whole episode is about the Titans trying to reduce plastic waste washing ashore by taking on a warlord ruling over an island of garbage.
  • It Was with You All Along: After defeating Major A.B.S., Polly and Tara convince him to turn over a new leaf by telling him that, despite his despair over being non-recyclable, he was still capable of repurposing himself from a toy to a villain and can repurpose himself again for a good cause.
  • Self-Deprecation: Cyborg says it'll be no problem infiltrating the villain's island of trash, saying "People been calling us garbage since the reboot".
  • Wonder Twin Powers: Polly and Tara have the power to combine into a variety of items formed from recycled plastic, such as furniture and carpeting.
