Tropes

  • Beat Still, My Heart: Ardat murders Ketch by ripping out and crushing his heart.
  • Character Death: Ketch, Belphegor, and Rowena.
  • Defiant to the End: Ardat realizes quickly that Ketch is not going to bargain her with anything he knows. So she opts to kill him instead.
  • Evil All Along: Or rather, more evil than he admitted all along. It is revealed that Belphegor is merely using Team Free Will so he can absorb Hell's souls, therefore giving him unlimited power.
  • A God Am I: Belphegor's plan all along was to draw all the souls that escaped Hell into himself using Lilith's crook, using their power to become the new god.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Rowena decides to use her body as a conduit to release the souls back to Hell, since Castiel killing Belphegor unwittingly destroyed Lilith's crook, making them unable to return the souls without a human sacrifice.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Castiel justifies killing Belphegor as preventing a future threat from looming over. Since the act indirectly caused Rowena's death, Dean isn't having it.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: After Rowena's first spell to close the Hellgate fails, she says that she needs something to drink. When Sam gives her water, she specifies that she meant a different sort of drink. Dean rolls his eyes and loans her his flask.
  • Screw Destiny: Sam attempts to resist the revelation from Death's library that he'll be the one to kill Rowena permanently. She insists, though, for the sake of the world.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Ketch refuses to reveal the Winchesters' location and gets brutally murdered for it. His killer still ends up being able to track them anyway.
  • Shapeshifter Guilt Trip: As Castiel is beating Belphegor, the demon tries to pretend that he's really Jack and begs Castiel to stop. It doesn't work.
  • To Hell and Back: Castiel and Belphegor travel into the Pit of Hell to recover an ancient artifact from Lilith's vacant chambers.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Dean starts to blame Castiel for everything bad happening to the team recently. The biggest punch in the gut is when Dean once again pins the blame for causing his mother's death on him. Cas realizes that Dean has not moved from Mary's demise and probably never will.
  • Wham Episode: Rowena, Ketch, and Belphegor all die but not before closing the hellhole opened by God. Cas realizes that Dean is still angry at him and decides to leave the bunker.
