Recap / Seinfeld S 5 E 9 The Masseuse

Go To

Jerry is dating a masseuse named Jodi, who doesn't want to give him a massage, while Elaine is dating a man named Joel, who has the same name as an infamous criminal, and George is seeing Jaren once more.

This episode has examples of the following tropes:

  • All of the Other Reindeer:
    • Jerry feels left out because his girlfriend Jodi, who is a masseuse, does not give him a massage, like she did, for instance, to Kramer. He compares this to going to Idaho and eating carrots (as an analogy to sex) instead of potatoes (because Idaho potatoes are famous in the United States).
    • Jodi does not like George, after they went to dinner and he did a joke about Women Drivers. He tries to make it up by helping her carry her work material (after giving Kramer a massage at his house) but he blows it by proposing going on a Double Date with and telling Jodi to tell her sister hi for him (he doesn't know Jodi's sister).
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Kramer implicitly compares Jodi's massage to sex. This further annoys Jerry and he forbids Kramer from having any more massages with her.
  • Foe Romance Subtext: George becomes enamoured with Jodi, who despises him, because of exactly her despise, to the point, Karen rebukes him, ergo her stop seeing him.
George: She just dislikes me so much, it's irresistible.
  • Named Like My Name:invoked In-Universe, Elaine's boyfriend has the same name as Serial Killer Joel Rifkin, which causes them a lot of discomfort when Kramer wants his tickets and Rifkin's name is blurted out via the stadium's megaphones. Elaine wants him to change his name and, while reading an NFL magazine she suggests Deion (after Deion Sanders) and O.J. (after O. J. Simpson); she later suggests Ellis or Remy. Joel chooses Stuart, Alex or Todd, neither of which Elaine likes.
