The twerps come upon Wayfarer Island just in time to witness a Butterfree migration. When Ash comes across a Caterpie that had not evolved yet, he is reminded of his own Butterfree, and decides to give Caterpie a crash course to get it to evolve and join its friends on the migration.
This episode contains examples of the following tropes:
- Commuting on a Bus: Ash has Professor Oak send Leavanny to help train Caterpie.
- Continuity Nod: Naturally, we get references to "Bye Bye Butterfree".
- Recycled Premise: Averted. Although it contains another Butterfree migration and references Ash's Butterfree, there are no romantic plotlines involved in this episode, and Team Rocket's plot du jour does not specifically target the Butterfree.
- Training Montage: Half the episode is this, as Ash tries to get Caterpie to evolve twice to join the next migration.
