Ash and Iris really weren't being the best of friends this time around.
This episode contains examples of the following tropes:
- Armor-Piercing Question: When Ash tells Cilan that he'll never leave Pikachu because of a mistake, Cilan asked him would he do the same thing to Iris, despite their earlier falling out, which causes Ash to have a Jerkass Realization.
- Big Damn Heroes: Iris orders Axew to use Dragon Rage at Team Rocket at the last minute to save Pikachu.
- Blatant Lies: Ash and Iris tell these to themselves by acting as though they aren’t worried about each other. The audience and Cilan all know that they are lying.
- Feud Episode: This episode revolves around Iris and Ash having a disagreement, and the former dumping Ash as a friend. Thankfully, they make up at the end of the episode.
- How We Got Here: The episode begins with Ash and Iris parting ways, and the first act is Cilan narrating the events that led up to that point. Then Meowth gets his hands on the trope, with considerably less success.
- Hypocritical Humor: Averted. This is one of the few episodes when Iris' catchphrase wasn’t Played for Laughs. Iris and Ash were both portrayed as immature in this episode.
- Jerkass Has a Point: Iris is pompous, but Cilan did agree with Iris about rightfully calling the berry being bitter.
- Only Sane Man: Poor Cilan... being in the middle of the whole argument
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Downplayed. Iris and Ash deliver this to each other about how they feel towards one another.
