- Freudian Excuse: After catching up with the quartet of pirate Pokémon, Ash, Iris, Cilan and the Officer Jenny accompanying them learn via translation from Meowth, that the reason the pirates had been stealing, was because they were abandoned by their uncaring trainers. Croconaw for losing too many gym battles and for not evolving, Azumarill for evolving, Octillery was considered useless after it evolved (its trainer didn't know Remoraid evolves into Octillery), and Ducklett because it didn't seem sad over losing a battle.
