Not even some Teeth-Clenched Teamwork can ease this Love Triangle.

Ash, Iris, Cilan, and Dawn take a break from Junior Cup training by heading to an island where a Shiny Onix is rumored to live. When the group gets separated, they end up facing separate dangers before the eponymous resident Pokémon corner them. Is it Meloetta's turn to be the hero?

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Beach Episode: Well, they are on an island.
  • Catchphrase: Dawn's infamous "No need to worry" quote has been said here a lot of times. Averted in 2 rare cases when both Dawn and Iris get lost in the island, and then later on get chased by an Onix.
Dawn: There WAS a need to worry!
    Dawn: Time to worry now!
  • Hard Head: Collision attacks like Aqua Jet and Headbutt probably weren't good ideas against Onix.
  • Internal Homage: To Brock.
    • The episode focuses heavily on Onixes. Onix was Brock's first Pokemon.
    • Dawn mentions that Cilan's cooking rivals that of Brock. She mentioned to Cilan and Iris that he left the group to go to Pokemon Doctor school. Later on, she mentions Brock's name after being stunned by Foongus, wishing he was there to deal with the situation.
  • Music Soothes the Savage Beast: Meloetta makes use of her singing once more. First, to cool an argument between Oshawott and Piplup. Later, to summon the Shiny Onix that was the leader of the Onix herd on the island to call the other Onix off.
  • Mythology Gag: The 87th episode of a regional arc involves an island with a strange Onix, just like the 87th episode of the Kanto/Orange Islands arc.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Iris touching a Magnemite, only to get shocked.
    • Dawn touching a Foongus, only to get sprayed by Stun Spore.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Oshawott and Piplup work together against the Onix, but are back at each other's throats over Meloetta at the end of the episode.
