Recap / Pokemon EC 24 Shrieking A Difficult Lesson

Go To

Several days after the battle with Team Shadow, Shining Armor teaches Flash and Springer an important lesson about overcoming type immunity.

  • Beyond the Impossible: Springer once again learns a move that should be impossible for Riolu without evolving into Lucario; this time Bone Rush.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Shining Armor teaches Flash he needs to avoid this with Springer. Springer only knows Normal and Fighting type moves, which means he can't do anything against Ghost types, which are immune to both of these types of moves. Shining explains this is something every trainer who has Normal, Fighting, Electric, Ghost, Psychic, Ground, Poison, and Dragon-types should consider, because all of those types of Pokémon, have at least one other type that are immune to their normal attacks. Flash and Springer manage to overcome this when Springer learns the Ground type move Bone Rush.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Flash and Springer get another from Shining Armor. Starting off as another Curb-Stomp Battle, Springer can't do anything against Banshriek due to it being a Ghost type and therefore immune to all of his attacks. Partway into the battle though, Springer learns Bone Rush, and gives him something he can use against Banshriek. It doesn't last long though, since once Banshriek uses Disable to prevent Bone Rush, Springer is once again helpless and quickly defeated.
  • Discard and Draw: Just like in the games, when a Pokémon learns a new move they are forced to forget a previous one to only have four at one time. This is the first time it is openly acnowledged that learning a new move prevents an old one from being used again. In this case, Springer learning Bone Rush caused him to forget Double Team, which by extention also cut him off from using Aura Sphere Barrage.
  • Hope Spot: During the practice match between Springer and Banshriek, Springer learns Bone Rush and is finally able to fight back against Banshriek. It doesn't last long though, since Banshriek uses Disable to stop Springer from using it, leaving him helpless once again.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: Besides Springer learning another new move this chapter mostly seems to be another Breather Episode after Team Shadow's invasion and Flash and his friends begin to make their way to Dragonia City. However, the professors hacking the warp tiles in the Crystal Empire, and connecting them to the global transport system later ends up playing a major role during the final Team Shadow arc later in the series.
  • The Mentor: Shining Armor takes up this role to Flash for the chapter, pointing out one of the weaknesses holding him and Springer back to help them overcome it.
  • The Reveal: Shining Armor has a Banshriek on his team, having evolved from the Ghouwail he traded for.
  • Sonic Scream: Shining Armor's Banshriek is called the "Scream Pokémon". It constantly lets out screams during the battle and knows Ghostly Wail. Makes sense, considering it is based on a banshee.
