"Shut up, both of you! We're gonna fix this cause I'm not losing Russell because you two have to make and/or date babies!"
Jess

"Kids" is the 21st episode of New Girl's first season.

Cece fears she is pregnant, Jess babysits Russell's daughter over the weekend, Nick dates a college girl, and Winston deals with his boss.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Ambiguous Situation: When Schmidt walks Cece out of the loft, he turns her around and tries to block her view of the sky behind them, even telling her to drive in the opposite direction. When he turns around, we see that there is skywriting that reads "Marry Me'. It's unclear if this is something that he commissioned before learning Cece wasn't pregnant, or if it was a coincidence he tried to hide from her so as not to scare her off.
  • But We Used a Condom!: Cece about Schmidt during her Pregnancy Scare. He "gets so athletic" that she stresses that the condom is all but useless.
  • Brick Joke: Schmidt threatens to bring another girl to an ice show instead of Cece and calls Nick ("Nicole"). At the end the two of them end up going and Nick is having a great time while Schmidt isn't.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Nick has been hooking up with college students for a few episodes, but balks when he learns that Chloe is only 18.
  • Lazily Gender-Flipped Name: Cece challenges Schmidt to call another girl. He transparently calls Nick, and calls him "Nick...ole".
  • The Missus and the Ex: Interactions are rather awkward between Russell's current girlfriend Jess (missus) and ex-wife Ouli (ex), particularly when Ouli continues to refer to Russell as her "husband" rather than "ex", and insisting that in a way, he'll always be so.
  • Precocious Crush: Russell's pre-teen daughter quickly falls for the 30-ish Nick despite every discouragement from Jess and Nick himself.
  • Pregnancy Scare: Cece's period is late and she spends the episode worrying that she might be pregnant. She turns out not to be.
  • Shout-Out: To Bridge to Terabithia. Jess calls Nick said book title for making little kids cry.
  • Younger Than They Look: Chloe, Nick's latest college-aged fling, is not only 18 years old, but remembers Jess substituting in her middle-school history class and riding the bus with Sarah.
