Remorseful for the role he inadvertently played in Shinnok's near-konquest of Earthrealm, Scorpion offers to commit hara-kiri. Raiden, however, had other plans: he imbues Scorpion and the Shirai Ryu with a portion of the Jinsei's essence, turning them into immortal guardians of Earthrealm.

    Kung Jin
Kung Jin is praised for his assistance in aiding Earthrealm, but he remains worried for his cousin, Kung Lao, who now resides in the Netherrealm. When he finds him in the Netherrealm, he realizes that the Shaolin spirit within Lao is stronger than Quan Chi's dark magic, and vows to find a way to return him to the land of the living.

    Takeda
Takeda sets out to find his mother's killer, along with his father Kenshi. They infiltrate the Red Dragon clan and find an actual red dragon, Caro, who reveals the identity of the murderer. With his magic, Caro sends Takeda and Kenshi to a cave, where they find Taven, a man who Caro claims has reason to find the murderer as well...

    Kotal Kahn
Kotal Kahn returns to Outworld to rebuild his empire, only to be attacked and ousted by Raiden. The Kahn petitions the Elder Gods to help him defend his realm. His request is granted in the form of the most sacred of laws: every ten years, Kotal and his warriors must face Raiden's champions in Mortal Kombat.

    D'Vorah
D'Vorah captures Shinnok and implants larvae within him. The Kytinn young born from his body absorb his godlike powers. When they mature, they proceed to ravage all realms.

    Erron Black
150 years ago, Erron Black was rewarded with slowed aging by Shang Tsung after completing a contract with the sorcerer. With time on his side, Erron could be patient with his jobs, waiting for the perfect time to strike. He used this to his advantage to assassinate Cassie Cage and her team.

    Ferra/Torr
Upon nearing physical maturation, Ferra retreated to the Tarkatan wastelands and, over the course of the next three years, underwent a transformation, during which time her companion, Torr, withered and died. At the end of this transformation, Ferra became a hulking brute like Torr and is given a young symbiotic companion to accompany her. Thus, the cycle begins anew...

    Johnny Cage
Johnny Cage returns to Shang Tsung's temple, where his strange adventures as a champion of Earthrealm began. Therein, he finds a book that revealed the secret to the Edenians' millennia-long lifespans. So much for retirement...

    Sonya Blade
Sonya has a nightmare about Kano holding Cassie and Jax at gunpoint, forcing her to choose who lives and dies. She chooses Cassie, and Kano executes Jax. When she awakens, she learns from Johnny Cage that, to her horror, Jax had been assassinated.

    Jax
Johnny Cage asks Jax to look after his team while he's on the mend. Jax agrees, since it would let him look after his daughter Jacqui. When Erron Black appears to assassinate the team, Jax steps in to defend them and subdues Erron, but then succumbs to a bullet wound he took...

    Ermac
Ermac returns to Shao Kahn's fortress in search of a voice that calls to him. Therein, a cloud of dust steals one of his souls, gains human form, and starts taking all of Ermac's souls. The assailant is revealed to be a resurrected Shang Tsung.

    Kenshi
On his quest with Takeda to avenge his wife's murder, Kenshi finds a man named Taven, who reveals the murderer to be his brother Daegon, who also killed their parents. Together, the trio lay siege to the Red Dragons, with Kenshi personally laying Daegon low.

    Kitana
Kitana has a vision where she is the queen of Edenia, after it was freed from Outworld. In this vision of a timeline unaltered, Shao Kahn had destroyed Earthrealm, yet she united the other realms against the konquerer and defeated him. Sadly, it was but only that: a vision. In truth, she is a revanent trapped in the Netherrealm, which she blamed on Raiden.

    Mileena
Mileena awakens in the Flesh Pits and finds herself surrounded by clones of herself, all of whom shared a psychic link with one another. Mileena decides to rally her clones together into a fearsome army to exact revenge against those who wronged her, not realizing that this was a plot by her architect...

    Reptile
Kotal Kahn sends Reptile to Earthrealm on surveillance. From a crack in the earth formed during kombat, Reptile finds others of his kind who remained in Earthrealm instead of being wiped out in the konquest of Zaterra. Reptile decides to stay with his kin, and help them reclaim Earthrealm for themselves.

    Raiden
Raiden decides to no longer simply defend Earthrealm and instead destroy all threats to its safety, beginning with a preemptive strike on Outworld along with the Shirai Ryu before Kotal Kahn could rebuild his army. With the Kahn defeated, Raiden konquers Outworld.

    Liu Kang
Shinnok's defeat leaves a power vacuum in the Netherrealm, with demons fighting amongst one another for dominion. The former Shaolin fights his way to the top and becomes the Netherrealm's new sovereign, and plots his konquest of the other realms...

    Kung Lao
Kung Lao was trapped in the Netherrealm, his soul corrupted by Quan Chi. With help from his cousin Kung Jin, however, he is able to stave off the dark magic inside him and escape the Netherrealm. He now fights against the forces of the Netherrealm.

    Quan Chi
Quan Chi is summoned by the Elder Gods. The summoning and subsequent defeat of Shinnok had caused an imbalance of power which the Elder Gods now task Quan Chi with rectifying. His task: kill Raiden.

    Shinnok
Successful in his konquest of Earthrealm, Shinnok proceeds to merge all of the realms and its inhabitants into The One Being, which devours the Elder Gods and results in the end of all reality.

    Goro
The Shokan had been ousted for being neutral in Outworld's civil war. When the war ends, however, Goro re-emerges. With Kotal Kahn's forces weak and Mileena's rebels scattered, Goro is able to gain dominion and become the new ruler of Outworld.

    Tanya
Mileena's execution seems to dash all hopes that Tanya has of liberating Edenia. With Rain proving useless in her plans, Tanya gives him up to Kotal Kahn in exchange for a lenient punishment, buying her time to form a new plot...

    Tremor
Tremor had gained great power since he and the Black Dragons had ventured into the Dream Realm: having been sent there by Kano to find a weapon to steal Shinnok's amulet, Tremor's exposure to the realm turned him into an Earth Elemental, able to rival even Raiden and Fujin.

    Jason Voorhees
The revenant menace of Friday the 13th catches the attention of the Netherrealm's new ruler, Liu Kang. He offered Jason a plentiful bounty of victims in exchange for his fealty. Jason instead disembowels Liu Kang and strangles him with his own innards, as Jason's loyalty lies only with one person: his own mother.

    Predator
The Predator took an interest in magic after seeing it wielded during his hunt on Earthrealm. After studying Shinnok's amulet, he incorporates sorcery into his weaponry and becomes an even more dangerous hunter: The Apex Predator.

    Leatherface
After killing Shinnok, Leatherface skins his face and plans to present it to Cassie Cage as a present in hopes it'll win her affection. After sawing through an army base to reach her, killing her friends in the process, his advances are spurned. He kills her and chops her up for his brother, Drayton, to use in his chili, but keeps her face for himself.

    Alien
After killing Shinnok, the Tarkatan Alien began capturing Kombatants to use as hosts, spawning Xenomorphs from Ferra, Torr, and Goro, among others. Once a Queen was produced, the Xenomorphs launched an all-out assault on Outworld. The Kahnum stood as the last bastion against the invasion but was wiped out, with the Tarkatan Xenomorph itself killing Kotal Khan.

    Triborg
Triborg lays siege to the Special Forces, wiping them out and gaining access to the Lin Kuei storage drives that birthed him. He saves the brainwave data of his fellow Lin Kuei onto the S-F servers and uses the S-F's resources to create robotic bodies for them. The cyberized Lin Kuei are reborn, but splinter off from Sub-Zero's Lin Kuei to form their own clan: the Tekunin.

Bo' Rai Cho returns to his homeland of Outworld, which was now protected by the laws of Mortal Kombat to fight alongside Kotal Kahn in the realm's defense. With the warriors of Outworld trained by Bo' Rai Cho, and Bo' Rai Cho's fighting prowess, Outworld was able to defend itself against Raiden and Earthrealm's invasion.
