Recap / Married With Children S 10 E 18 Turning Japanese

Go To

"Turning Japanese" is an episode in the tenth season of Married... with Children.

Marcy has a chance for promotion and tries to impress Mr. Shimokawa, her Japanese boss (Pat Morita), but none of her attempts pan out... until her boss, who turns out to be a vintage/junk car collection enthusiast, sees Al's Dodge. Marcy then tries to convince Al to sell his dodge, but Al isn't going to budge so easily.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Every Man Has His Price: Mr. Shimokawa certainly thinks so, as he's willing to shell out a large sum of money for Al's Alleged Car.
  • Foreign Culture Fetish: Mr. Shimokawa has this interestingly for America itself, to the point he collect American junker cars.
  • Humiliation Conga: Marcy looks racist in front of her boss, is forced to perform at a strip club, and is demoted to ATM beeper note  at the end of the episode.
  • National Stereotypes: To get a promotion at her banking job, Marcy, with Jefferson in tow, first try to suck up to her Japanese boss by playing up all kinds of absurd Japanese stereotypes. Her boss's inner thoughts make it clear that he is not impressed.
Mr. Shimokawa: (thinking to himself) How original. Serving sushi to a Japanese man in America. It's like Gilligan getting off the island and being offered a coconut!
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: Marcy's line before punching her boss out.
Consider this my letter of resignation.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Marcy finally gets the promotion she spends the whole episode seeking, only to find out that her boss agrees on the promotion only because she can "shake it" after seeing her perform at the Nudie Bar, which she does only as part of Al's conditions for agreeing to sell his Dodge. Marcy, the Straw Feminist that she is, punches him in anger, which results in a riot inside the bar that leads to him being arrested for said riot and her being Reassigned to Antarctica as the result, though she's shown to be willing to forgo her promotion for her own principle, if her Pre-Asskicking One-Liner before punching her boss out is any indication.
Consider this my letter of resignation.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Things go pretty well for the Bundy family, though at Marcy's expense.
