Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Did Not Get the Girl: At the end, Dr. Baker pulls off his engagement, realizing he isn't compatible for the young, youthful Kate.
  • Given Name Reveal: This is implied to be the first episode to reveal Dr. Baker's first name, Hiram, when Kate Thorvald says "I like you, Hiram Baker".
  • May–December Romance: More like April-September, as Doc Baker is only about 50 and Kate is in her early 20s, but still ... .
  • Recycled Premise: Years later, a nearly identical plot was used in the season 9 episode "Love", where Mr. Edwards falls for Laura's blind friend, Jane Canfield, who's also much younger than he is.
  • Upper-Class Equestrian: Kate spends is seen horse-riding during her vacancy in Walnut Grove. When she spots Dr. Baker at the Ingalls place, whom she's taken an interest in, she sends her horse away and pretends she was dropped by it to stay alone with her love target.
  • Uptown Girl: In addition to being much younger than Dr. Baker, Kate also comes from a much wealthier family, which is another factor about whether or not their relationship, as she'd go from a privileged background to a Frontier Doctor's wife in a dry town.
  • Vague Age: Dr. Baker's age isn't specified here, but he's said to have delivered both parties of the Olafsen couple who are now having a baby and already have another son, implying he's at least in his late forties, assuming he was in his early 20's when he delivered them and they're now older than that.
