Jules Hunter and her four-year-old daughter Ruby disappear, with Jules's violently abusive husband as the main suspect. The missing pair are soon reported dead and the husband locked up until it turns out that the pair are actually alive after being placed into hiding by former ADA Alex Cabot. Such manipulation places Benson into a tight spot until a tragic event makes Benson question the entire Witness Protection System. Meanwhile, Stone's sister, Pamela, develops tardive dyskinesia and he has to make a tough decision about her treatment.

- The Bus Came Back: This is Alex Cabot's first episode on the series in 6 years, having last appeared in the Season 13 episode "Learning Curve."
- Downer Ending: Jules is killed in a deliberate hit-and-run presumably orchestrated by Nick, who receives custody of Ruby as her sole surviving parent. Jules's sister is mentioned to be suing Nick for custody of Ruby, though Alex isn't optimistic about her chances.
