Recap / Law And Order S 23 E 5 Last Dance

Go To

A murder case against a billionaire tech mogul is thrown into jeopardy when the victim's therapist chooses to assert doctor-patient privilege and thus refuses to testify as to the murderer's motive. Things get worse when the replacement witness turns out to have immensely powerful political connections which he's willing to use to avoid testifying. When Price notes their collapsing case and insists they should make a generous plea offer, McCoy rejects this idea and takes the extreme step of prosecuting the case himself.

  • End of an Era: After over 30 years of service to the DA's office, Jack McCoy decides to retire after he successfully convicts Kelton of murder.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: After Jack McCoy gets a conviction, he decides to resign rather than risk not getting re-elected. He knows that the Mayor is powerful enough to pull every string he can to get his opponent elected and then go after everyone who wronged him, including Price. By resigning, the state governor can appoint a replacement with integrity while avoiding the mayor's wrath.
  • Red Herring: Miguel Lopez is suspected of the murder because he ran from the police and had the victim's necklace in his pocket; however, he turned out to be innocent.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: A witness jokingly tells victim-to-be Veronica Knight that early morning speed walks are her dirty secret. Veronica takes her seriously and tells her not to be ashamed of who she is.
