Recap / Katmandu Family Matters

Go To

After many months of pregnancy, Leahtrah Middlesmith gives birth to two children, named Panka and Thea, named after Pyndan's younger sister and Liska's eldest daughter respectively, although unfortunately, unlike her first litter, we never see their birth, but rather the narrative begins directly as Leah is changing the babies' diapers, with the help of her daughter Loanzah, while her mother comments on another story about her ancestor, Liska.

Meanwhile, during the latter's era, the main protagonist undergoes several new changes in her life, now that she is a warrior, so she wears new clothes instead of the ones Liska wore when she was a slave, but at the same time, the tribe faces several problems that Liska must solve.

First, because her mate, Rial, was taken prisoner during the attack on the village to be sold into slavery, the tribe needs someone else to replace the warrior in his place while Liska and Pyndan continue to search for him. To do this, Liska must travel to her homeland, the Lowland tribe, in search of her younger brother, Markree, and convince him to come with her.

But this will not be easy, as the tribe where she used to live still distrusts the Highland tribe, since they both stoled their resorces, not to mention both Rial and Pyndan had kidnapped Liska years ago, and and the latter is now considered a traitor in the eyes of her former tribe, so she will need more than just brute force to convince them.

  • Immediate Sequel: Sort of; takes place between the events from issue 4 after the battle against Commander Arn and his raiders the next day and the events from issue 5.
  • My Greatest Failure: Pyndan states that helping Rial to kidnap Liska was his biggest mistake in his life, and he already knew no amount of apologies will fix that.
  • Old Flame: Sort of. Brand, one of the strongest warriors of the Lowland tribe, was chasing Liska for her affections since they were kids, and he wasn't happy to see her again, now as a member of their enemies.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: Liska found out that she is pregnant from Rial when Mother Sanna made her a new buckskin, something she didn't noticed out until that point.
  • Voodoo Shark: The whole sub-arc tried to resolve a long-time Plot Hole regarding Markree's unexpected appearance in issue 5 alongside his older sister, when he is now part of the Highland tribe. The keyword here is tried, because the whole narrative created more unexplained holes:
    • The last time we see Markree, time-wise, he was a little kid. According to the chronological events of the comic, only a year has passed since his sister Liska was kidnapped and only less than a few months since she returned to her home village, but when Liska is reunited with her Markree, he looks more adult than he should be. This is because the comic book chronology retconned the events explained in The Katmandu Handbook, when Liska was a teen when she was kidnapped and Markree was just a little kitten kid.
    • Even if we consider Markree's Undying Loyalty for Liska, that alone wouldn't explain the fact he quickly accepted to go to live with her on the same tribe that kidnapped her, and with one of the people, in this case, Pyndan, who kidnapped his sister in the first place, considerating his own resentful personality towards Rial and Pyndan later on.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Brand punched Liska in the face when the latter tried to hug her aunt, Deronda, partly because Liska is now branded a traitor by her former tribe, as she is the mate of the man who kidnapped her.
