Recap / Jane The Virgin S 5 E 16 Chapter Ninety Seven

Go To

"If you want this book to sell, you have got to embrace the crime in a big way. Build to an explosive climax. Got it?"
Lily

Jane's new agent is unsatisfied with the resolution of her novel's crime and suggests a Switched at Birth plot twist, causing Jane to become paranoid that Rose switched Mateo when he was returned. Petra tries to close a deal with a franchising investor, but is hindered by the return of her mother as the investor's guru. Rogelio takes things into his own hands when River is reluctant to continue This is Mars because of her strained relationship with her daughter.

Tropes:

  • Call-Back: Season one plot points (Mateo's kidnapping, Magda pushing Alba down the stairs) are recalled for the episode's plot.
  • Caught on Tape: Alba manages to record Magda confessing to pushing her down the stairs and blackmails her into leaving town with it.
  • Decoy Getaway: Rose breaks out of prison by getting herself into an ambulance and having a car crash it. Cue multiple women given Latex Perfection masks to look like her, confusing the police and buying her time.
  • Family Versus Career: A problem for Rogelio once again; River wants to relocate This is Mars to New York, which will force Rogelio to move if he wants to stay on the show.
  • Good All Along: Luisa had been working with the police to track down Rose.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Rose's escape plan, like many of her earlier plans, relies on Latex Perfection masks. It then turns out that the "Luisa" she's meeting is actually a policewoman in a Luisa mask.
  • Human Shield: Rose uses Bobby as a human shield as she's being shot at by police, and escapes because of it.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Jane's new agent Lily thinks that the crime elements in her book haven't yet been resolved, which serves as commentary for the criminal antagonists of the show, who have largely been laying low. Indeed, Magda returns to terrorize Petra one more time (before being scared off by Alba), and Rose finally makes her move.
  • Switched at Birth: Mentioned as a potential plot twist for Jane's novel, which causes her to wonder if it applies in real life too.
  • Technologically Blind Elders: Downplayed; Alba has trouble navigating her new phone (for example, she tries to call a Lyft but calls Xo instead), but she gets a handle on it enough to record a confession out of Magda.
