Go To

When the maid-of-honor winds up dead after a bachelorette party, it´s up to Charlie and Rex to untangle the events of the night.

Tropes:

  • Beautiful Sexual Assault Victim: Luisa's autopsy reveals her to have been assaulted before being thrown off the hotel balcony to her death, with her attacker having tried to force-feed her a codeine tablet that she spit out. Karma expresses her disgust at the whole situation.
  • Childhood Friends: Luisa was this to the bride-to-be Taylor Burns, having known each other since kindergarten. While Taylor is broken up about her death, she finds some comfort in knowing that Luisa managed to stay clean when Sarah tells her about it.
  • Drugs Are Bad: The wedding party's best man Nate Seaver secretly moonlights as a drug trafficker. He was in the middle of a deal outside the hotel before Luisa caught him in the act and threatened to expose him. His response was to corner her up on the balcony and drug her to discredit anything she would say, but when he failed and she bit him on his hand after spitting the codeine out, he decided to instead throw her over the railing to her death.
  • Happily Married: Luisa was the maid of honor helping to celebrate the marriage of her two friends Taylor and Rashid prior to the events of the episode. However, Rashid ended up having an affair with bridesmaid Hannah while they were drunk and comforting each other over Luisa’s death. While the two are ashamed about what happened and desperate to keep it a secret, Charlie suggests that it would be better to just come clean to Taylor instead of her finding out through the investigation.
  • Recovered Addict:
    • Luisa was a former addict whose vices were opiates and alcohol. Knowing of her history, the others assume that her fall was from her falling off the wagon again. Turns out it wasn't, as a hair sample reveals that Luisa had been clean for months and still was up until her death, with the codeine found in her mouth never managing to reach her bloodstream.
    • The investigation brings Sarah to mind of a friend she had with a history of drugs and alcohol who fell off the wagon countless times, to the point where Sarah eventually cut ties with her after trying to get help for her. However, the end of the episode has Sarah choosing to try and rekindle their friendship after becoming inspired by Luisa and the similar situation she went through.
  • She Knows Too Much: Nate killed Luisa after she caught him dealing and threatened to expose him. He originally planned to force-feed her codeine to discredit anything she would say, until events forced him to instead throw her off the railing of the hotel balcony.
  • Slipping a Mickey: Drew Pang (the guy flirting with Luisa at the club in the beginning of the episode) had plans of spiking Luisa’s soda with a date-rape drug. The plan backfired when Luisa instead used her drink to help fellow bridesmaid Quincy Thomas when the latter became too drunk to keep partying, leading to her getting roofied instead. He’s taken in by Charlie for possession and is mentioned to also likely be receiving an assault charge.
  • Stag Party: The episode opens with a bachelorette party being celebrated at a local strip club while the bachelors have a tamer gathering at a restaurant. The good times grind to a halt after the maid of honor Luisa Hastings is found dead outside the hotel, the crime scene and initial analysis of the body suggesting that she had been assaulted and thrown over the railing of the balcony.
