Fallen Heroes: Part 2

Directed By: Kathryn Bigelow
Story By: James Yoshimura
Teleplay By: Joy Lusco

Giardello and the rest of the Homicide unit make good on his vow to declare war on the Mahoney family in retaliation for Junior Bunk shooting up the squad. They go after all Mahoney's men, and find Georgia Rae dead, but not before one of them shoots Bayliss. Stivers comes clean to Giardello about Kellerman shooting Luther, and Falsone and Pembleton eventually get Kellerman to confess. This proves to be the last straw for Pembleton, as he decides to resign from the squad.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Get Out!: Giardello orders Georgia Rae's attorneys out of his office when they refuse to have her turn herself in.
  • It's All My Fault: Stivers blames herself for not coming forward earlier about Kellerman shooting Luther. Pembleton in turn blames himself for Bayliss getting shot, because he hesitated before shooting one of Mahoney's dealers.
  • Leave Behind a Pistol: After Kellerman finally admits to killing Luther in cold blood, and Lewis comes into the box, Kellerman asks Lewis to give him his gun. Lewis tells Kellerman that's one favor he won't do.
  • Put on a Bus: This was the last episode for Pembleton, as well as his wife (though Pembleton returned for the movie).
  • The Scapegoat: Barnfather warns Giardello he may need a scapegoat for the Homicide squad room getting shot up. Ironically, Kellerman actually was responsible, so Barnfather gets what he wants.
  • Taking the Bullet: Bayliss steps in front of Pembleton and gets shot in the back.
  • Turn in Your Badge: Falsone and Pembleton do this to Kellerman. Pembleton turns in his badge to Giardello at the hospital.
  • Two-Part Episode
  • Undying Loyalty: Kellerman refuses to give up Lewis or Stivers, insisting he's the only one to blame for Luther's shooting. He accepts Gee's offer to resign in order to keep them from being fired once their false reports become public.
  • Wham Shot: When Kellerman tries to convince Falsone and Pembleton Luther was threatening Lewis, he holds his arm in a way proving Luther was lowering his gun when Kellerman shot him.
