Go To

The sixteenth episode of the fourth season of Hey Arnold!.

Grandpa's Sister

Grandpa Phil is not happy when his sister, Mitzi, comes to visit the Boarding House, due to a falling-out they had many years ago.

Synchronized Swimming

Coach Wittenberg convinces the boys of P.S. 118 to form a synchonized swimming team.

"Grandpa's Sister" provides examples of:

  • Freudian Excuse: The reason Phil and Mitzi hate each other is because of a bad memory many decades in the making. They used to love each other as children, and even more-so when they took care of their family dog Pooter together. But one night, Pooter got loose from their yard and was hit by a vehicle. Despite all hope he'd recover, the poor little dog didn't make it. Since then, brother and sister have harbored grief and pain in their hearts, blaming each other for Pooter's untimely death.
  • Good-Times Montage: The episode ends with Arnold and Grandpa Phil going on the fishing trip with Mitzi, signifying brother and sister reconnecting after decades of needless anger and blame.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Phil plays some mean pranks on Mitzi to scare her away from the boarding home, but she smartly tricks her brother into falling in them instead:
    • Phil made several holes on the ceiling of Mitzi's room and let water slide on them, leaving Mitzi wet and she later gets back at him by pulling the toilet lever to leave Phil with hot water in the shower, burning him.
    • Phil put laxative on Mitzi's food but she put it on his plate while he wasn't looking and ended up going to the bathroom.
    • Phil later puts several rat traps on Mitzi's room claiming there was rats on the building, but Mitzi calls for him and Phil trips on the traps instead.
    • As the ultimate prank, Phil made a trap to send Mitzi flying to a hornet nest (and even tested in on Oskar first), and although he gave up after reconciling with his sister, Phil still accidentally activated the trap himself ending up stung by hornets.
  • This Means War!: After Phil is thrown out from his room by Mitzi and Gertie, he's asked by Arnold if he's going to make peace with his sister but Phil refuses and tells Arnold this:
    Phil: Tomorrow there'll be war.
  • We Used to Be Friends: According to the photo album of Mitzi and Phil as children, there was a time when the two of them were loving siblings, especially when Pooter was a part of their lives. But mysteriously enough, the photos show they inexplicably stopped getting along.

"Synchronized Swimming" provides examples of:

  • Everybody Cries: Coach Wittenburg talks about his emotional experience watching a movie called Come Back, Wayne, particularly the ending. By the time he has finished talking about his experience to his synchronized swimming team, he and most of his team are in tears. The only ones who don't cry are Arnold and Gerald, although Gerald's lips do quiver at one point.
