The Leaving Feast / End of Term / End of Year One / Back to Life, Back to Reality

In hopes of freeing Sirius from Azkaban, Harry approaches the headmaster and lies about the contents of his nightmares, claiming that they reveal Peter as the Secret Keeper. Dumbledore is visibly shaken, and promises to look into it, although he doesn't explain the implications, which frustrates Harry.

At one of the last martial arts practices for the year (where Ron and Neville have become fairly competent), Harry uses Contrived Clumsiness to break both of their wands, so that he can pay for better matched replacements. Hermione sees through him, but the boys don't. Their trip home is largely uneventful, although Harry is pleased to have the chance to talk with Ginny in person.

  • Contrived Clumsiness: Ron and Neville are both using inherited wands, which aren't well matched to them, Ron because of the Weasleys' limited funds, and Neville because his grandmother wanted him to follow in his father's footsteps. Knowing that they would be reluctant to accept him just outright paying for new ones, Harry arranges to try a new martial arts move — which results in him landing on both of them and snapping their wands in half. He is "horrified" and promptly insists that they accept money for replacements.
