A Word with the Weasleys

Molly Weasley's perspective on the events of first year is shown, especially how she watches Ginny's friendship with Harry develop. She recognises Ginny's crush quickly, but decides that it will do no harm for Ginny to have someone to write to, and is impressed by how Harry appears to be having a good influence on Ginny, motivating her to work and learn more.

She is more concerned after the events of Halloween, but struck by how much more serious Ron has become, after he recounts how they saved Hermione's life. At the same time, Ginny's reaction to Harry's injury highlights how attached Ginny has actually become, which makes Molly concerned, until she learns that Harry has never had a Christmas present before, whereupon she starts knitting another jumper.

Near the end of the year, Arthur and Molly are idly concerned about Ron's marks, until Ginny just laughs and reveals that she knows more about it; Harry has told her how their group of friends are all around the top of the class. Molly watches Harry and Ginny's reunion at the train platform, but is reassured by how they're both awkward and blushing around each other.

  • Abusive Parents: Ginny's accounts of Harry's aunt and uncle are quite concerning for both of her parents. When it comes out that Harry has never had a Christmas present before, Molly decides to take action and sends one herself.
  • First Love: Molly notices Ginny's crush immediately on the way home from the station, and doesn't expect it to go anywhere, but considers that to be "an essential part of becoming a woman," so she doesn't try to interfere.
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs: Molly refers to Ginny having a "Quill pal"
