A Quarrel with Quirrell

The headmaster catches Harry returning books to the Restricted Section, putting an end to Harry's forays. However, Harry is able to use the conversation to help Hermione realise that Dumbledore and Snape have been reading minds, as Dumbledore knew things that weren't written down anywhere; she commits herself to seeking a solution over the summer break.

Harry then intercepts Professor Quirrell's attempt to steal the Philosopher's Stone, ambushing and mortally wounding him while he's sneaking past Fluffy. He also deliberately plants misinformation, to make Voldemort think that the headmaster knew of Quirrell's possession all along. In the aftermath, Harry lies about the conversation in an attempt to pressure the headmaster into telling him more about the prophecy, but Dumbledore puts him off.

Harry's friends, however, especially Ron, are upset that he didn't involve them. He makes excuses by claiming that he didn't really know anything needed doing, just had a bad feeling, which mollifies their feelings, though Ron is still exasperated by how Harry gets into trouble.

  • Cherry Tapping: Harry essentially defeats Quirrell with a single Stinging Hex — applied to Fluffy's rump just as Quirrell is about to go through the trapdoor, thus making Fluffy immediately awake and upset. Quirrell is thrown into a wall with three sets of giant bite marks before he can react.
  • Feed the Mole: Harry deliberately lies to Professor Quirrell with the intent of misleading Voldemort about what Professor Dumbledore knows.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: Before Harry Grabs Quirrelmort
Harry: Let's test out mum's handiwork, shall we?
