A Summer Seen Through Brown Eyes

Ginny's point of view on year 1 is shown, initially confused by Harry but happy to be treated as a young woman rather than a little girl, and to be trusted with all his news. His repeated injuries are very worrying to her, and her brothers sometimes give her a hard time about having a crush on him, but Harry himself always respects her.

In the summer, Neville invites everyone to come and see his new greenhouse, and is introduced to Occlumency, which (being a naturally private person) he immediately latches onto. The group visits Diagon Alley afterward to shop for school, and Harry is stunned to see Ron buy Crookshanks as a replacement for Scabbers. He also encounters Gilderoy Lockhart at the bookshop, but causes a scene rather than participating in Lockhart's publicity stunt. Lucius Malfoy again triggers a brawl with Arthur Weasley, and slips the Diary into Ginny's cauldron, but Harry intercepts it at home and hides it in his own trunk. He later talks to Ginny, learning to his surprise that she felt a bit like a fifth wheel at the Longbottoms', but he reassures her that he never meant her to be left out.

  • Bottomless Magazines: Harry attempts to empty out the magazine of the enchanted Glock he pilfered from Mr Weasley, so that it will be harmless — but it just keeps shooting, apparently conjuring new bullets as they're fired. By the time there are thirty spent bullet casings on the ground, he gives up and takes a new interest in the gun, thinking it may be more useful than he originally thought.
  • Dramatic Irony: In the original timeline, Hermione bought Crookshanks, and his acrimonious relationship with Scabbers was a major source of tension between her and Ron. This time, Ron buys him, with the specific intention of sniffing out suspicious characters like Scabbers. Only Harry appreciates the contrast.
Harry: I didn't know you were a cat person, Ron.
