Recap / Friends S 6 E 6 The One On The Last Night

Go To

On the eve of Chandler and Rachel moving out for good, Chandler tries to trick Joey into accepting money to pay the rent. Meanwhile, Monica and Rachel list the things they dislike about each other to feel less bad about going their separate ways (Phoebe's idea), but it makes them angry at each other instead.

Tropes:

  • Bottle Episode: The episode takes place entirely in the two main apartments, with a few brief scenes in Ross's place, and no guest stars.
  • Cassandra Truth: In The Stinger, Chandler tries explaining to Ross that "Cups" was just something he made up so he could trick Joey into accepting rent money. Ross doesn't believe him and assumes Chandler is just mad he lost all his money to Joey and that Joey then lost it all to Ross.
  • Calvinball: A deliberate example. Since Joey is too prideful to accept money from Chandler, Chandler makes up a card game called "Cups" solely designed to let Joey win hundreds of dollars that he can use for rent. Joey constantly wins because Chandler says so, even though he always has rubbish cards. Later Joey manages to lose to Ross at the same game. Chandler tries explaining the ruse to Ross, but Ross just assumes Chandler is just bitter that Joey lost the money so quick. When Ross offers to play the game so he can try to win it back, Chandler agrees and begins making up more rules to ensure he wins.
  • Cardboard Pal: Ross makes a "Fake Ben" out of space clothes and a pumpkin so that if Monica looks through the windows she'll believe he really does have his son for the evening.
  • Friendship Moment:
    • Rachel and Monica when listing each other's good qualities and mending their friendship.
    • Upon realizing Chandler is trying to give him money again, Joey says it's best friend that he's going to miss and not his money.
  • Ominous Latin Chanting: "O Fortuna" from Carmina Burana hilariously plays when Joey makes an own goal on foosball, complete with dramatic close-ups and slow-motion.
  • Only Sane Woman: Phoebe when Monica and Rachel start fighting. She points out how they are getting really nasty towards each other and urges them to mend fences.
  • Own Goal: One of the ways Chandler tries to get Joey to take his money is by betting it on foosball, with Chandler deliberately losing. It backfires when they make it all-in and Joey makes an own goal.
  • Roommate Drama: Rachel and Monica fight after listing the things about living with each other that annoyed them. They make up when Monica lists Rachel's good points to convince Phoebe to live with her.
  • Wham Episode: Monica and Chandler officially move in together, permanently changing up the living arrangements that had been in place since the first episode.
