Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 5 E 9 Just The Two Of Us

Go To

Jessica and Louis win a Radio Contest for a weekend vacation, only to learn that it's actually a retreat for couples therapy. Eddie takes advantage of their absence to drive to a party, but ends up in trouble and learns about Grandma's sordid past when she comes to his aid.

  • Call-Back: The "Cattleman Wagon" that plays an important role in this episode was introduced at the end of "Where Have All the Cattlemen Gone?", when Eddie got employed by his dad to do deliveries (while Grandma Huang rides shotgun since he only has a Learner's Permit).
  • Double-Meaning Title: The titular "two of us" refers to both Jessica & Louis, and Eddie & Grandma.
  • Radio Contest: The Jessica and Louis plotline starts with them winning one. In The Tag, another contest serves as Book Ends, with Jessica and Louis calling in again just to berate the host for not informing his audience of what the retreat actually entailed (and accepting the second contest's prize as consolation).
  • Retired Badass: At the start of the episode, Eddie has grown tired of Grandma's childish taste in music, nicknames, and other entertainment. However, when the Cattleman Wagon runs out of gas at a bad time and she shows him how to siphon some from the family van, she reveals she had a very rough upbringing and has spent her twilight years simply trying to enjoy the things she never had a chance to as an actual child.
  • Undesirable Prize: The "vacation" that Louis and Jessica win turns out to be one of these, to the point that they call the radio station again in The Tag to file a complaint.
