Recap / Frasier S 09 E 03 The Return Of Martin Crane

Go To

Martin recalls his tragic last night as a cop as he prepares for his first night's work as a security guard.

Tropes:

  • Mundane Solution: The night Martin's new job starts, Niles gifts Daphne two tickets to see Billy Joel, and Daphne's coincidentally gifts Niles two tickets to see Mongolian throat singing for the same night. After having an argument over how the last night they spent together was focused on Niles' hobbies, Niles decides to give the throat singing tickets to Frasier, who then tries to convince Roz to dogsit Eddie, which she refuses due to recent arguments about her work position and not wanting to be treated as a gopher. During the conflict between who needs to stay to watch Eddie, Roz admits that she'd enjoy seeing Billy Joel, and everyone realizes that the best way to solve their scheduling issue is for both girls to see Billy Joel and both boys to see the throat singing. It's subverted because in the process they completely forgot someone still needs to take care of Eddie, but played straight in The Tag, as Frasier just comes back home during an intermission.
  • Retirony: A non-fatal version, as Martin's cop partner Frank had just convinced Martin that he should spend some time reconnecting with Frasier and Niles just moments before asking Martin to fetch him a smoothie from a nearby convenience store, which is where Martin gets his Career-Ending Injury.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Martin, Niles, Daphne, and Roz are all very supportive of Martin getting his new job, and wish him the best of luck...up until they all realize they have plans for that night and none of them will be free to give Eddie a walk, leading to so much bickering between them that Martin has to scold his sons before leaving for work.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: The majority of the episode consists of three flashbacks: one depicting Martin, his old cop partner Frank, and Niles back when Martin worked as an officer, one in which Martin and Frank stop for a slushie on the day Martin got shot at a convenience store, and one in which Martin is recuperating in a hospital.
