The Man in the Shadows is the first episode of the third season of Father Brown.

Father Brown finds himself embroiled with MI5 when he looks into the death of an art restorer who supposedly drowned himself, an investigation which puts Lady Felicia in a compromising position.

Tropes:

  • Better to Die than Be Killed: Attempted by the killer, a Soviet agent.
    • Committed by their accomplice, who was covering for them. Father Brown shows Genre Savvy there but it's too late.
  • Covert Group with Mundane Front: The archives room of the manor is being used by MI5 as an intel site. Ostensibly, the people going in and out are supposedly restoring the historic room. Luckily for them, the lord of the manor has zero interest in what they're doing.
  • Curtain Camouflage: Sid is forced to hide behind a curtain when he is snooping around outside the archive and the door opens unexpectedly.
  • Poisoned Chalice Switcheroo: Father Brown pulls this with a slight twist, as he does it to save a life. Knowing that the killer has put cyanide in her tea so she won't be taken alive, he asks her for some sugar and then switches teacups with her while her back is turned.
