Recap / Excel Saga E 02 The Woman From Mars

Go To

Space Butler: "Now...is my chance...to take the princess...to Earth!"

Episode 2 opens with a Star Wars-style opening text crawl, with Rikdo stating that Excel Saga is now a science fiction anime.

In the next scene, Excel addresses the mountains of complaint letters behind her and apologizes to those watching the anime for making the first episode too similar to the manga. She then explains the premise of the series to newcomers and introduces each of the characters met so far — herself, Ilpalazzo, Menchi, Pedro, Rikdo, Nabeshin, and her neighbors — and concept art sketches of characters to be met in later episodes.

As she completes her recap, she suddenly realizes that she's floating in space, as a giant battleship appears behind her. On board the spaceship, a group of little aliens called Puchuus dance around a coffin containing a mysterious woman, while a man with green-and-yellow hair is captivated by their cuteness.

Excel floats away from the mothership, begging for the Great Will of the Macrocosm to save her.

Elsewhere, Pedro wakes up in his old office building, believing his fiery death was All Just a Dream. But upon seeing the Great Will in a separate sleeping bag, he realizes it wasn't just a dream, and freaks out.

Excel is told that the Great Will is unable to help her, and then gets sucked up into a Swirly Energy Thingy...and then she wakes up believing her own experience was a dream, having sleepwalked into her kitchen preparing Menchi for "emergency rations". The resulting commotion annoys Watanabe and Sumiyoshi, but Iwata is unfazed. Watanabe gets angry at Iwata for only thinking about his stomach when they have more important long-term issues to worry about.

As the Puchuu mothership flies overhead, Excel worries that she might need an umbrella, but the weather report she consults tells her that it'll be sunny all over Japan. However, it indeed does start raining, as Nabeshin senses the presence of the man aboard the Puchuu ship, who calls himself Space Butler. The Puchuus then prepare for their descent to Earth.

The rain outside thoroughly floods the ACROSS base, and Ilpalazzo learns of the impending Puchuu invasion while Excel drowns in the rising waters.

Back at the apartment, Menchi tries to escape so that she doesn't get eaten by Excel. Watanabe opens the door and lets her out, unaware that she was even trying to get out.

Excel's new part-time job has her delivering papers through the flooded streets of F City. She spots Menchi swimming in the streets and prepares to carry her back home, when she spots one of the Puchuus and absentmindedly strikes it, and then steals a device from it that looks like a cross between a megaphone and a hair dryer. Excel tries to wear it as an Arm Cannon, but it only shoots out a puff of smoke at first. She fires it again and it unleashes a huge energy beam that blasts a hole through the Puchuu mothership. The Puchuus notice their spaceship is about to crash to Earth, and temporarily halt their invasion to try and get back to Mars. Unfortunately for them, Excel discovers them and starts smacking them around. She once again calls on the Great Will to turn things back to normal, but the Will is too busy having sex with Pedro to hear her.

The Puchuus' makeshift spacecraft crashes into their mothership, and the other Puchuus aboard catch Space Butler trying to sneak the girl in the coffin (Hyatt) onto Earth. He nearly succumbs to the Puchuus' cuteness when Nabeshin comes aboard and tries to save him, but their cuteness quickly overwhelmes Nabeshin, as well.

Excel boards the mothership and starts blasting around randomly, causing immense structural damage. Nabeshin and Space Butler snap out of their trance when they realize the Puchuus turn ugly when damaged, and can no longer hypnotize them with their cuteness. Space Butler implores Nabeshin to take Hyatt away and make sure she lands somewhere safe while he stays behind to fight the Puchuus. As he starts bleeding out from an internal wound, he reminisces about happier times with Nabeshin, and then sets off a chain reaction of explosives he had planted on the mothership to bring it down himself.

Hyatt's coffin floats into the ACROSS base, and Ilpalazzo immediately hires her as his second subordinate. Excel, upon crashing back down to Earth, is captured by a group of American soldiers.

Tropes used in this episode:

  • Arm Cannon: Excel wields one of the Puchuu weapons like this.
  • Cuteness Proximity: The Puchuus have a natural effect of making anyone completely defenseless when they make eye contact. Nabeshin boards the Puchuu mothership wearing a blindfold to prevent himself from getting sucked in by their charms, but one of the Puchuus simply gets around this by removing the blindfold.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Excel dreams of herself floating in outer space in range of a giant spaceship. Said spaceship later appears in F City as the Puchuus begin their invasion of Earth.
  • Or Was It a Dream?: Pedro believes this of his death in the previous episode. Excel also believes this of her floating around in outer space.
  • Smoking Hot Sex: The Great Will does this twice in her appearances with Pedro.
  • Talking Weapon: The Puchuu laser cannon Excel picks up blurts out a canned message the first time she tries to fire it. Once she gets the hang of how to use it properly, it stops talking.
