After getting bad advice from his father, Snotlout tries to seize leadership of the Dragon Riders and starts making reckless decisions on his own.

- Call-Back: Fishlegs gives Stormfly the Dragon Root antidote Dagur showed Hiccup how to make in "Enemy of my Enemy".
- Chekhov's Gun: The Dragon Root Arrows that Snotlout simply throws over a cliff instead of destroying. When Snotlout himself falls off the cliff, he notices the arrows are growing Dragonroot in the sun, which makes him realize that the tarps can't possibly be hiding a Dragon Root plantation.
- Chekhov's Skill: Botany. It turns out Snotlout managed to remember Fishlegs' lesson about where plants grow, and realized that if dragon root grows in the sun, then there must be a trap under the tarps.
- Does This Remind You of Anything?: The setup of the Dragon Root base and the attack on it comes off as a drug production base with the authorities conducting a bust.
- Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: What Snotlout's discovery that Dragon Root grows in the sun amounts to.
- Jerkass: Spitelout, at his most narcissistic, convinces his son not to trust his friends and makes him believe he has to take over the Dragon Riders, which leads to him completely losing confidence in himself. He never gets any comeuppance for it, either.
