First Aired- November 2, 1967

Sergeant Joe Friday and Officer Bill Gannon, working in Narcotics division, pay a visit to a couple suspected of smoking marijuana. A report was made by the wife's father out of concern for his daughter's safety.

Just the Tropes, ma'am:

  • As the Good Book Says...: Jean responds to her father's concerns by misquoting the words of Paul from Ephesians 6:4 to the officers. She starts correctly, but it actually ends differently: "…but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord."
Jean: "Fathers, provoke not your children unto wrath; the old ways are not their ways; your dusk is their dawn; the future is theirs."
Friday: Try chapter 5, lady; the apostle Paul also said this.
    Jean: Yes, what is that?
Friday: "See then, that ye walk circumspectly; not as fools, but as wise."
  • Censored Child Death: For Robin by the overflowing tub when the two officers come to bust the Shipleys. Her "body" is kept well out of frame when Jean takes her out, and seen only as being wrapped inside of a towel afterward.
  • Fist of Rage: Literally and metaphorically ... Friday, in the last moments of the final scene where he crushes a baggie of marijuana because of his disgust over what was a senseless tragedy.
  • Properly Paranoid: Jean's father was worried about Robin's safety due to her parents occasionally being high on marijuana. He was right, but despite Friday and Gannon's efforts, they were unable to protect her.
  • Seen It All: Both Friday and Gannon have seen their share of dead bodies, both expectedly and unexpectedly, and have been able to deal with it. However, this is averted in this episode ... nothing can prepare them for what they witness when Mrs. Shipley shrieks in horror at finding her baby daughter in the bathtub, having drowned. Gannon has to vomit while Friday holds the baggie of marijuana in his hand before crushing it in his fist.
  • Vomiting Cop: After the reveal that the young couple's baby had drowned in an overflowing bathtub, Gannon remarks that he had been on the job nearly 20 years and never once had felt the need to vomit ... until now. He rushes out of the room to do just that.
