Recap / Diagnosis Murder S 3 E 2 Witness To Murder

Go To

In a protected area of woodland, a forest ranger finds a trailer, with a man shot in the head and a nearby little girl holding a shotgun. The girl, Blair Worrell, is believed to be the dead man's daughter, and the witness to his murder. She isn't talking due to shock, leaving Mark to take her into his care until she can.

"Witness to Murder" displays symptoms of the following tropes:

  • Asshole Victim: Daryl beat his wife into a coma for trying to leave him and beat his daughter regularly. Not a loss, is what we're saying.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Ben shot Daryl dead because he wouldn't let her leave with Blair.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Daryl got his killing blow straight to the head with a shotgun.
  • Car Fu: A car nearly runs Amanda down as she and Jesse go through the trailer for Blair's stuff.
  • Domestic Abuse: Daryl beat Blair more than once, and when his wife Theresa tried to leave him, he violently beat her into a coma. Again, not a loss.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Jesse and the crew looking over McPherson's dead body makes them realize that the real killer is still out there... and Amanda is at the beach house with Blair alone.
  • Good All Along: Ben, more or less. After seemingly stalking Blair at Community General throughout the episode, it's revealed at the end that he wanted to protect her, and had killed Daryl for the same reason. It's also mentioned that he's likely to have a lighter sentence, since he used legitimate self-defense.
  • Red Herring: McPherson, Daryl's partner in the phony credit card scheme. He'd make a good suspect, but Steve realizes the man's dead body doesn't match the description of the shady guy that has been hanging around Community General.
  • Wham Line: "Benny, no!", which not only shows the first time Blair has spoken throughout the episode, but reveals that she and Ben are siblings
