    Prologue: Ultimate Revival!
The prologue starts with piano prodigy Kaede Akamatsu waking up inside of a locker in an empty classroom. She then notices and frees two other people in lockers that were next to the one she was in: detective-in-training Shuichi Saihara and Kiki Naegi, daughter of Hope's Peak Academy's Headmaster and Vice-Headmistress Makoto and Kyoko Naegi. When the three introduce each other, a panicking Kiki discovers that she can't remember her last name or anything about her past. After helping calm the distressed girl, Kaede talks to her and Shuichi about their current predicament. While Kaede and Shuichi remember being kidnapped, Kiki doesn't. After the trio investigate the classroom at Shuichi's suggestion, with no new discoveries with the exceptions of some odd coins and that they're on a very high floor of the building they're in, they continue to investigate the rest of the mysterious university. They eventually make their way to the gymnasium where they discover thirteen other people. Everyone is confused and trying to figure out what's happening with the exception of the unusually calm Rantaro Amami, who seems to know more than he's letting on. Before anyone can question him, they're introduced to the self-proclaimed headmaster of the mysterious Kibou Academy: Monokuma.

Meanwhile, at the Naegi household, Kyoko gets worried over not hearing from her daughter after she moved for college. When Makoto calls the university to check on Kiki's status, he discovers that the university never received her acceptance letter and that the school was undergoing construction when she left to move to her dorm room. After telling Kyoko, the two of them discusses what they should do next when they're interrupted by their daughter's former babysitter Maki Momota. Apparently while she and the Naegi's other children (Mokubo, Koto, and Kiri) were watching TV, the airways got hijacked and a weird black and white bear appeared. Makoto and Kyoko check it out and discover, to their horror, that Monokuma has been reactivated and that Kiki is now in a Killing Game. Seeing this, Kyoko calls the chief of police and brother of the late Kiyotaka Ishimaru, Kiyoki Ishimaru, who says that he's got every department investigating the case.

Back at Kibou University, Monokuma explains to the group of 16 that the reason that they're in the university is to be part of a Killing Game. When a mysterious boy in black questions him on how they're suppose to kill each other, the bear explains the rules of the Killing Game. He says that if someone murders someone else, the killer (referred to as the "Blackened") must make it through a Class Trial without getting caught. If the remaining students (referred to as the "Spotless") guess who the Blackened is correctly, the Blackened is executed while everyone else lives. But if everyone guesses incorrectly, then everyone but the Blackened gets executed while they get to leave the university. When Kaede and Kiki tell Monokuma that none of them will participate in the Killing Game, all the bear does is laugh at their defiance.

At the police station, Kiyoki assigns an unnamed detective to the kidnapping case. They swear to themselves that they will crack the case and save everyone.

Chapter One: My Class Trial, Our Class Trial!
The chapter starts with the reveal of the name of the Killing Game: Danganronpa 4: Next Generation Killing! As the adults are wondering why someone would bring back the Killing Game as a TV show, Kyoko tells her children to stay away from the TVs in order to avoid the more gruesome aspects of the Killing Game. The three siblings, however, wish to stay and watch in order to support their sister. Reluctantly, Makoto allows them to stay on the condition that they let Maki take them out of the room when anything too gruesome comes up.

Back at Kibou University, Monokuma hands the group their E-Handbooks and leaves. After everyone reads the rules, the group begins to argue with each other over what they should do. Eventually, Kaede gets everyone to calm down and suggests that they introduce themselves. After she, Shuichi, and Kiki introduce themselves, everyone else sans Rantaro (who had introduced himself in the Prologue) give their introductions: the cosplaying otaku Tsumugi Shirogane, the giant Friend to Bugs Gonta Gokuhara, the devoted maid Kirumi Tojo (the three having been classmates of Kiki with the former two being her Childhood Friends), the former tennis pro Ryoma Hoshi, the robot K1-B0/Keebo, the calm older man Gentarou Hongou (nicknamed "Ace"), the gentle and blind Light Field (nicknamed "Snake"), his Genki Girl sister Clover Field, the amnesiac only known as "Seven", the scantily clad Hazuki Kashiwabara (nicknamed "Lotus"), the paranoid Teruaki Kubota, and the mysteriously stoic Sokyu.

After introductions are done, everyone agrees to investigate the floor they're on. While no one finds any clear exit route, Gonta notes how he found a fire escape ladder and shows it to everyone. This gives Keebo the idea to take the fire escape ladders from all the windows and weld them together in order to escape. Everyone's able to make the ladder and Kiki volunteers to test it. Unfortunately, the ladder wasn't long enough to safely reach the ground floor and Kiki nearly falls to her death. After everyone saves her, Monokuma appears and reveals that he knew about the group's plan but let them try in order to crush their hopes. As soon as the bear leaves, Kiki breaks down in tears and screams how she wants to go home. Kaede tries to cheer her up and convince everyone to try another escape attempt, but mostly everyone has given up and blame Kaede for pushing them too much.

The next day, on the way to the kitchen, Kaede runs into Kiki and apologizes to her for nearly getting her killed. While Kiki does forgive her, Kaede swears to herself that she won't put Kiki in danger again. After the two enter the Dining Hall and Kaede apologizes to the rest of the group, everyone discusses their next plan. The only thing they can come up with comes from Snake, who suggests they bide their time until Monokuma and whoever's controlling him slips up.

While Kaede spends some Free Time with Kiki, Shuichi approaches the two to show them something he's discovered. The three arrive at the library when Shuichi reveals a hidden door styled like Monokuma with a card reader, theorizing that someone in the group's working with the bear. The next day, while everyone's eating breakfast, Monokuma appears with a motive to kill called the First Blood Perk: the first person who kills gets to leave without a Class Trial.

Bringing Kaede and Kiki to the library, Shuichi reveals that he figured out that the key card for the hidden door had recently been use and fears his theory might be correct. He also theorizes that the hidden room might be used to make spare Monokumas and plans to use this to expose the mastermind. The next day, Kaede and Kiki are brought to the Dining Hall by a worried Ace where they witness Ryoma offering himself as a sacrifice so someone can escape and seek help, fearing Monokuma will eventually get bored and put on a time limit. Rantaro eventually calms Ryoma down by declaring he will end the Killing Game himself. As he leaves, Rantaro asks if anyone remembers "The Tragedy", which no one does.

Shuichi then reveals his plan to Kaede and Kiki: by using cameras connected with motion sensors, he hopes to catch some pictures of the mastermind as they go through the hidden door. The three are able to convince Keebo to make the modified cameras, though they don't tell him why out of fear that he might be the mastermind.

After the trio get the supplies needed from the Warehouse, they're able to get the modified cameras from Keebo. After setting the cameras up in the library, the three camp out at a nearby classroom to wait for the trap to be sprung. While they wait, Shuichi reveals his backstory to Kaede and Kiki: he came across a murder case and solved it, only to learn that the culprit committed the murder out of revenge for the death of his family that were killed by the victim. Learning the culprit's backstory and seeing the hatred in his eyes causes Shuichi to fear uncovering the truth, though the girls reassure him that he did what he had to do as a detective.

Eventually, the camera's alarm gets set off and the three head off towards the library. By the time they get there, they witness the hidden door closing and find Rantaro dead on the floor. The Dead Body Announcement plays, calling everyone else to the library. After everyone appears and find Rantaro's corpse, Monokuma appears and asks for the Blackened to claim the First Blood Perk. When no one claims it, the bear gives everyone the Monokuma File (a file that gives certain details about the victim's death) and leaves them to investigate the murder. After the investigation's done, Monokuma calls everyone to an elevator that leads to the Trial Grounds and the Class Trial begins.

Kiki was initially accused to be the killer by Teruaki due to her breakdown after the failed escape attempt, but is eventually cleared of suspicion by Kaede. Tsumugi is also accused of possibly using her cosplay to pretend to be someone else and kill Rantaro, but is also cleared of suspicion. Everyone eventually questions Shuichi, who had been quiet throughout the trial. Kaede tries to lie in order to help Shuichi, but Kiki quickly calls out her lie. Kaede eventually reveals that she already knew who the culprit is the entire time when Kiki, who already suspected who the killer was along with Shuichi and knowing he couldn't bring himself to say it, takes over the Class Trial and reveals that the Blackened is none other than Kaede herself.

Eventually, Voting Time happens and Monokuma announces the results: the one who killed Rantaro was Kaede. Kaede reveals that her real target was the mastermind, wanting to kill them before they could implement a time limit, and even refused the First Blood Perk in the hope of exposing the mastermind during the Class Trial. Just as Monokuma's about to execute her, almost all of the remaining members of the group try to stop the bear. Kaede pleads for them to stop, not wanting anyone to die, and entrusts her wish for the group to survive and be friends to everyone as well as giving the leadership role to Kiki.

After Kaede's execution, a bitter Shuichi blames Kiki for the pianist's death. Kiki then angrily says how she didn't have much of a choice and that she misses Kaede as much as he does. After the two finish arguing, Snake gives the two the key to Kaede's dorm room in order for them to mourn her death. There, Shuichi and Kiki notice her piano and try to play "Clair De Lune" to honor her memory, albeit unsuccessfully.

Back at the police station, the unnamed detective angrily tells the officers working under them to hurry and find the captive's location while thinking to themselves that they need to free the remaining captives before a certain one dies.

Chapter Two: A Thin Line Divides Heaven and Hell!
The next day, the new protagonist Kiki heads to the Dining Hall for breakfast when she runs into Shuichi. As they head to the Dining Hall, the two apologize to each other for their argument after Kaede's execution. As everyone's eating breakfast, Monokuma appears before them and reveals that they have unlocked the floor below them which everyone investigates. While no one finds an exit, Kiki and Shuichi find three volumes in a series of book called "A History of Hope’s Peak Academy" that describes The Tragedy and the three previous Killing Games: Vol. 1: Trigger Happy Havoc, Vol. 2: Goodbye Despair, and Vol. 3: The End Of Hope's Peak Academy. After the two read the books to the others, no one believes the books to be true even when Monokuma confirms they are, though it does cause them to remember when Rantaro asks the others if they remember The Tragedy.

The following morning, Kiki tries to think of a way to boost group morale when she comes up with the idea of a slumber party. After pitching the idea to everyone, they all agree to the idea and split into two groups: the boys will stay in the greenhouse while the girls will stay at the pool. After some preparations, the slumber party goes off without a hitch. Though when Kiki heads back to her room the next morning, she notices a mysterious laptop.

Turning it on, she finds a Motive Video showing her family congratulating her on getting to college, a video that the Naegis confirm to be fabricated. Heading to the Dining Hall, Kiki discovers that everyone else has a Motive Video and that everyone but Sokyu watch theirs. Kiki suggests that everyone talk about what's in their Motive Videos to support each other and take away any incentive to kill. Aside from her, the only one whose willing to talk about their Motive Video is Ryoma, who simply says there was nothing on it. Wanting to diffuse the tension, Clover offers to put on a magic show for everyone. Monokuma appears and suggests an escape trick, even offering to let her use piranhas he installed in the pool to kill anyone who tries swimming in the pool at nighttime. Despite everyone telling her not to listen to the bear, Clover insists on going through with the underwater escape trick.

After spending Free Time with Ace and Snake, Kiki heads to the gym the next day to watch Clover's magic show. Everyone else eventually arrives, though Ryoma, Kirumi, and Snake are mysteriously absent. The magic show starts as Lotus, acting as Clover's assistant, explains the trick: Clover has 60 seconds to escape the water-filled tank or else she'll get eaten alive by the piranhas. The trick seemingly goes wrong as the timer hits zero and the piranhas are dropped, much to everyone's concern. Though when the curtains covering the tank drops, Snake's lifeless body is revealed as his corpse is devoured by the piranhas.

Ryoma and Kirumi soon arrive to the gym, claiming to have overslept. Clover reappears and discovers the skeleton in the tank, which Lotus sadly tells her was her brother, leaving the girl devastated. Kiki tries to encourage the group by saying that they can rely on Shuichi's detective skills, only for the young detective to declare that he refuses to investigate out of fear of said skills getting someone else killed like Kaede and runs way. Seeing group morale getting low, Kiki volunteers to lead the investigation. After investigating the gym, Kiki tries to find Shuichi so that he can help in the investigation. She eventually finds him locked in his room while refusing to leave, though he at least tells Kiki his account of how Ace was surprised to see Teruaki in the Dining Hall before shutting her out. Eventually, investigation time is brought to an end as everyone heads for the elevator, including Shuichi due to participation in the Class Trial being mandatory.

The Class Trial starts with most of the group suspecting Clover due to Snake's corpse being found during her magic trick, with Lotus fiercely protecting her. Kiki's eventually able to explain how the underwater escape trick, clearing Clover's name. Suspicions soon start being directed towards Kirumi and Ryoma due to them being the only other people besides Snake to be absent throughout the day and being awake at nighttime when Snake died. Eventually, Kiki accuses Kirumi due to her being the only one able to set up the mechanism needed to move Snake's body from its actual place of death, the pool, to the tank. Kirumi admits to setting up the murder, though reveal that her target was actually Ryoma rather than Snake, which Ryoma confirms.

Kirumi explains that she planned on using Clover's magic show as a way to commit murder and escape. After setting up her trap, she searched for a target and found Ryoma on the fourth floor. Though after she knocked him out with a metal pipe, she mysteriously passed out as she was taking his body to the gym. While Kiki's willing to believe Kirumi didn't kill Snake, Clover can only asks her why she's willing to defend the maid, which Kiki answers by saying it's to keep her promise to Kaede to get everyone out alive. Shuichi, who had been silent throughout the trial and inspired by Kiki's words, finally participates by noting how Kirumi could've been drugged by a handkerchief laced with Soporil (a sedative) that he found in the trash and that the real killer hijacked her plan to kill their target. Kiki's able to deduce that the real killer was Ace due to him, the head of a pharmaceutical company, being well verse in making drugs. She also discovers that his target was Teruaki instead of Snake, hence his surprise over seeing him in the Dining Hall, and that the reason he killed Snake was due to the latter wearing Teruaki's pajamas. When Ace denies confusing the two men, Kiki counters by pointing out how he may possibly have Prosopagnosia (the inability to distinguish people's faces).

Voting Time happens and Monokuma confirms that Ace killed Snake. Ace confesses to the murder, revealing his more darker side, saying that his motive came from his Motive Video. Monokuma shows said video, which promised Ace the cure for his Prosopagnosia. In an act of desperation, Ace holds Kiki hostage using the Golden Gun that she had found and given to Snake prior to his death, believing the bear wouldn't execute him without Kiki (one of the rules stating that only the blackened would be executed). Monokuma's able to trick Ace into letting Kiki go, allowing the bear to execute the desperate man while he tries to run away.

After Ace's execution, Clover demands to know why Kirumi come up with the murder plan that ended up killing her brother. Like Ace, Kirumi says it was because of her Motive Video that showed her that she was made the de-facto Prime Minister of Japan (something that Makoto and Kyoko confirmed was fabricated) and was despite to escape and help her people. When she confronted Ryoma, the latter (sensing Kirumi's killing intent) allowed her to kill him since he learned that there was actually nothing in his Motive Video that showed anyone that cared about him. Despite this, Clover angrily blames both him and Kirumi for their unintentional role in Snake's death as she cries herself to sleep. While everyone heads back to their rooms, with Gonta carrying the sleeping Clover and Lotus offering to look over her, Shuichi apologizes to Kiki for his cowardice and promises he won't run away again.

Meanwhile, Sokyu rests in his room when Monokuma rings his doorbell and asks to talk to him. Sokyu reluctantly lets the bear in his room as someone watches from the shadows.

Chapter Three: Grief of a Sister and Suspicions of a Mother!
The next day, everyone eats breakfast in the Dining Hall when Kirumi and Ryoma arrive late. The two admit they had a talk where they agree that there were at fault for Snake's death, albeit unintentionally, and wish to work with everyone as atonement. Just like before, the group unlock a new floor that everyone sans Clover and Gonta investigates (the former too angry to want to investigate and the latter watches over her). Interestingly, Lotus insists on partnering with Sokyu during the investigating.

While no one finds an exit, Kiki and Shuichi finds and reads to everyone a book called "The Second Nonary Game" which describes the titular game. Surprisingly, some of the participants in DR4 (Teruaki, Light, Clover, Seven, Lotus and Ace) were participants of the Nonary Game, though none of the remaining members of that group remember it. After Monokuma verifies the story's authenticity, Lotus reveals that she saw the bear and Sokyu's late night meeting and believes that the latter's a spy for the mastermind. Sokyu confirms that he met with Monokuma, though he claims that the bear just uttered nonsense before leaving.

The next day, Kiki wakes up to a frantic Shuichi ringing her doorbell and urging her to head to the Dining Hall. The two find Clover holding a knife as Seven and Gonta keep her pinned to the ground. Clover reveals that she wants to kill herself in order to see her brother again, though Kiki's able to talk her out of it. Afterwards, the group take out any and all dangerous objects from Clover's room as Gonta and Seven agree to keep a close on her.

The next day, Kiki and Shuichi decide to spend the day trying to cheer the depressed Clover up. While there was a slight hiccup in the plan thanks to Monokuma, the two are able to convince her to live for her brother's sake. Later on, Clover apologizes to the group and says she'll fight with everyone to survive. Unfortunately, the moment is ruined by Monokuma appearing with a new motive, this time being everyone's embarrassing memories and secrets. Rather than give everyone the envelopes containing their secrets like in the Killing School Life, Monokuma keeps the secrets to himself in order to cause suspicions between the group and threatens to reveal these secrets to everyone in 24 hours if no one is killed. After the bear leaves, Lotus accuses Sokyu of having his secret involve Monokuma and demands to know it. Though when he denies knowing his secret, this only angers Lotus more until Kiki's able to get her to calm down.

The next day, Clover asks Lotus if she would want to watch a movie with her after lunch, which she accepts. Though after spending Free time with Teruaki, Kiki arrives to the Dining Hall and notices Clover isn't there. When she asks Shuichi and Lotus if they've seen her, they say that they hadn't. When the three search the AV Room, they find the room in complete disarray. The three continue to look for Clover until they find her dead on the floor of the Physics Lab.

After everyone's called to the Physics Lab by the Dead Body Announcement and start investigating, Kiki and Shuichi decide to split up to cover more ground: Kiki and her group (Ryoma, Tsumugi, Teruaki, and Gonta) go to investigate the AV Room while Shuichi and his group (Kirumi, Keebo, Lotus, and Seven) stay in the lab. Sokyu elects to stay out the investigation in order to make the groups even and out of a belief that Lotus would accuse him of tampering with evidence. After investigating the AV Room, Kiki meets up with Shuichi and notices that Lotus is absent. Seven reveals that she went to the kitchen to grab something to eat. Shuichi and Kiki go to meet her when they encounter Sokyu running out of the room while clutching his shoulder. The two make their way inside where they find Lotus dead with a knife through her stomach.

Everyone's called to the kitchen by the Dead Body Announcement as Monokuma appears to update the Monokuma Files. Sokyu then asks Monokuma what would happen if Clover and Lotus were killed by two separate people. Monokuma reveals that in that situation, only Clover's murderer would be considered the Blackened. Despite Sokyu noting how investigating Lotus' death would be pointless, Kiki insists on doing it anyway. Once again, Sokyu leaves for his room. After investigating the kitchen, the group's called to the elevator by Monokuma once again as another Class Trial begins.

The trial starts with everyone trying to find the murder weapon used in Clover's death. Despite the bloodied tuning fork found near her corpse, Kiki's able to deduce that the weapon was possibly a kitchen knife. While Sokyu wants to continue talking about Clover's death, Seven wants to talk about Lotus' death. Despite Sokyu's insistence on Lotus' death being pointless in the grand scheme of the trial and pointing out his frequent arguments with her, Seven still wants to avenge her death, which everyone else agrees on. Moving on to Lotus, Kiki's able to deduce that Sokyu was involved due to him running out of the kitchen around the time Lotus went there. She also figures out that Sokyu had attacked Lotus in self-defense due to the injury on his shoulder, which he confirms.

Sokyu reveals that when he went to the kitchen to get some food, Lotus tried to kill him due to her believing that he was the mastermind and killed Clover for seemingly discovering his secret. Lotus was only able to stab Sokyu in the shoulder before he stabbed her using a knife that he was using beforehand. Naturally, this causes some of the others to accuse Sokyu of killing Clover too, which he denies. After a Debate Scrum, Kiki's able to convince everyone not to vote for Sokyu and move back to discussing Clover's death.

Both Clover's and Lotus' deaths are revealed to be connected due to the Body Discovery Announcement playing when Kiki and Shuichi found Lotus despite it usually playing when three people find a corpse. The group's eventually able to make Monokuma reveal that the killer (Sokyu) doesn't count as one of the people who found Lotus' body, meaning the third person was Clover's killer. Shuichi and Kiki were able to figure out that Lotus' body was moved by the killer to clean the knife they used to kill Clover. Kiki's eventually able to deduce that it was Teruaki due to him leaving during Clover's investigation.

Voting Time occurs and Monokuma confirms that Teruaki killed Clover. Teruaki reveals that he killed Clover out of fear that the girl would kill him, both from Ace's previous attempt at his life and Clover's previous suicidal tendencies. Interestingly, as Monouma's about to subject him to Punishment Time, Teraki proclaims that he "didn’t sign up for this shit" and how "they" killed him. Afterwards, the rest of the group are left to think about what to do with Sokyu, though they decide to hold off that conversation for the next day, While walking back to there rooms, Kiki expresses to Shuichi her fears of growing numb to all the killings, which he reassures her isn't happening. They also discuss Teruaki's last words, believing the "they" he mentioned was the Mastermind.

Back at the police station, the unnamed detective is met by fellow detectives and Hope's Peak alumni Tenko Chabashira and Kokichi Oma, who offer their help in the investigation.

    Chapter Four: Pride and Prejudice!
Everyone gathers to eat breakfast in the Dining Hall, though there's tension in the air due to everyone's distrust of Sokyu. Once again, a new floor is unlocked as everyone investigates, though Sokyu elects to investigate alone due to everyone's distrust of him despite Kiki's pleas not to. Just like before, no exit is found while Kiki and Shuichi find a new book. The two read to everyone the book titled “The Second Tragedy That Almost Was", which describes how Kiki stopped a girl named Akki Tamonozan (a distant relative of Junko Enoshima) from converting their school into a cult and cause a second Tragedy, though Kiki's name is redacted.

The next day, the group decide to hold a civil trial to decide on whether or not to punish Sokyu for Lotus' death, with Kirumi acting as judge. When questioned, Sokyu reveals that he didn't reveal his confrontation with Lotus out of fear of being executed due to him not knowing about Monokuma's "First Come, First Serve" rule, though he also figured that Lotus' death wouldn't be looked over when Clover's death was made the top priority. When asked if he feels any remorse over killing Lotus, he admits that he doesn't and callously says that Lotus had it coming. The group (sans Kirumi and Sokyu) eventually decide to vote on Sokyu's fate: three are opposed to punishing him (Kiki, Seven, Gonta) while three are in favor of punishing him (Ryoma, Tsumugi, Keebo). Shuichi's asked to be the tiebreaker, but he decides to abstain from voting, leaving everyone in a deadlock. When asked by Kiki why he abstained, Shuichi admits that he did it because he agreed with both sides and ultimately couldn't come to a decision. While she understands Shuichi's perspective, Kiki thinks to herself how they don't have the luxury of being indecisive and fears that things could get worse the longer they put off what to do with Sokyu.

Desperate to mend the group back together, Kiki suggest that everyone have a group art session in the Art Room, which everyone (including a reluctant Sokyu) agrees to. This plan ends up backfiring as everyone mainly just did their own thing and Sokyu didn't even bother participating, calling Kiki annoying for dragging him along in group activities when he wanted to be left alone as he leaves.

Things don't get better the next day as Sokyu and Ryoma have an argument during breakfast, causing further discourse. Kiki pleads for everyone to stop arguing, noting that the growing tension and infighting is why Monokuma hasn't offered a motive. This fails as Ryoma points out how they still have to deal with Sokyu as everyone leaves the Dining Hall. Interestingly, as Seven leaves, he declares that he'll think of a way to end the infighting. While Kiki sits in her room, she met by Shuichi and a worried Gonta, the latter asking for the former two's help with the Dojo's door that's weirdly sealed shut. The three arrive at the Dojo and break down the door, discovering Seven's corpse in the archery range.

Everyone else arrives at the Dojo and immediately suspects Sokyu, who opts out of investigating like he did during Clover and Lotus' trial. Kiki calls everyone out for immediately accusing him of being guilty and asks Shuichi to back her up, only for Shuichi to note how it is possible for Sokyu to be the culprit. Feeling betrayed by Shuichi, a furious Kiki says she'll solve the case by herself and storms off. While she goes off to prove Sokyu's innocence, Shuichi and the rest of the group stay to investigate the Dojo. After some time, everyone's eventually called to the trial grounds, though Kiki's still giving everyone the cold shoulder.

Kiki tries to take control of the debate but, due to her not investigating the Dojo, she's easily countered by Shuichi. When the subject of alibis are brought up, a desperate Kiki (who had discovered a note from Seven asking to meet with Sokyu and the latter refusing to give her his alibi) resorts to lying by claiming that she was with Sokyu around the time of Seven's death. Shuichi's able call out her lie and figures that she only did it to try and prove that Sokyu isn't the prime suspect. She apologizes, though some of the group start doubting her word. Shuichi's able to convince everyone to believe Kiki and tells Sokyu to reveal his alibi.

Saying that he felt a little encouraged by Kiki's willingness to defend him, Sokyu reveals his alibi: He met up with Seven some time before his death, the latter inviting the former for a simple walk and talk. Kiki's able to confirm this with a note written by Seven, clearing Sokyu of suspicion. Gonta's considered the next suspect due to his handprint being found on the murder weapon, causing him to confess to killing Seven. Kiki's able to reveal that Gonta only tampered with the crime scene to make it look like he killed Seven when the reality is that Seven committed suicide.

After Voting Time, Monokuma confirms that Seven committed suicide. Gonta reveals that he tried to get everyone killed through an incorrect vote because he read a suicide note from Seven that says that he took his own life out of despair. Feeling guilty for not being able to protect anyone, Gonta tried to get everyone killed as an act of mercy. Shuichi looks at the note and figures out that the note is fake, which Monokuma confirms to have forged. The bear reads Seven's real suicide note, which reveals that he killed himself in order to stop all the infighting. It also reveals that Seven had regained his memories of the Nonary Game and that the Teruaki they knew had to be a fake, as the real Teruaki died during the Nonary Game. Rather than turning against each other like Monokuma had wanted when he made the fake suicide note, everyone rallies together and refuses to blame Kiki or Gonta. Out of pettiness, Monokuma decides to execute all of Gonta's bug friends. As they leave the trial grounds, Gonta and Kiki apologize for what they done and everyone forgives them.

During nighttime, Kiki finds a note from Sokyu saying that he wants to meet her in the Gym. The two meet and Sokyu tells Kiki that he owes her for standing up for him and that, while he won't be friends with everyone, he's willing to actually cooperate with everyone.

Back at the police department, Kokichi and Tenko meet with the unnamed detective and reveal that they were able to find the location of Kibou Academy.

Chapter Five: United We Stand, Divided We Fall!
When everyone gathers to eat breakfast, the group apologize to Sokyu and Kiki for their actions the previous day and show that they don't have any hard feelings for Kiki lying. Everyone discover that unlocked the last floor of the academy and decide to investigate, though Kiki opts out of pairing up with Shuichi like she usually does out of guilt of how she treated him.

Back at the police station, Tenko, Kokichi, and the unnamed detective get ready to head out to Kibou Academy. The three are met by Miu Iruma, Hope's Peak Academy's IT teacher and Keebo's mother/creator, who volunteered to help with her inventions in order to save her son.

Back at Kibou Academy, everyone's investigating the last floor when they discover the academy's Entrance Hall and the exit. Despite Gonta's attempt to force it open and Keebo's attempt to hack it, the door won't open. Monokuma appears and tells the group that the door will open if they go through another Class Trial, admitting to forgoing the "only two survivors allowed" rule out of boredom. Afterwards, the group decide to find a way to unlock the other doors in the hopes of finding an alternate exit.

While trying to find keys for the locked doors, Kiki spends Free Time with Sokyu. He reveals that, like Kiki, he doesn't remember much about his past or his last name. He admits that all he can remember is that he lives with his father and that he would frequently get into fights, resulting in him not having many friends and his more distrusting nature.

Back at the Naegi household, everyone is informed of the rescue mission and that it will take about a week.

Back at Kibou Academy, no one finds a key for the locked doors. As they think about what to do the next day, Monokuma calls Sokyu to the Headmaster's Office and tells him to come alone. Despite the obvious concerns of leaving him alone with the bear, Shuichi suggest that Sokyu does meet Monokuma in order to investigate the Headmaster's Office due to it being one of the locked rooms. Some time passes and everyone notices that they hadn't seen Sokyu since breakfast, so they go searching for him. They eventually find him in his room and asks him what he found and what Monokuma wanted him for, though he says he found nothing and that the bear simply spouted nonsense before kicking him out of his office. After everyone finishes eating, Shuchi pulls Kiki aside so they can talk about the tension between them since Seven's trial. She says that she doesn't want to talk due to her being stressed about Sokyu, though she promises to talk to him the next day.

Surprisingly, the next day starts with the cameras focusing on Shuichi's perspective as he heads to the Dining Hall. Everyone else gathers in the Dining Hall and notice that Kiki's absent. They check her room, only for her to not be there. They search the entire academy for her until Sokyu reports that he found her on the First Floor's staircase. Everyone gathers at that location and find her dead.

Everyone's devastated by this revelation, especially Kiki's family and former babysitter. While mostly everyone in the Naegi household want to continue watching to get closure for Kiki's death, Kyoko walks away from the room as she sees no point in watching since she lost her eldest daughter. It takes Shuichi encouraging the surviving members of the group to investigate Kiki's death for Kyoko to rejoin the rest of her family.

Back at Kibou Academy, Monokuma arrives to give everyone the Monokuma File as well as taunt everyone by revealing Kiki's last name to be "Naegi". Afterwards, the group investigate the entire academy, with Shuichi leading the charge. During the investigation, Kirumi and Keebo reveal to Shuichi that, though during some humiliating tasks for Monokuma, got the bear to agree to not dispose of Kiki's corpse like he usually does after a Class Trial so they can hold a proper funeral for her. Eventually, Monokuma calls everyone to the trial grounds. As everyone leaves, Shuichi stays back in order to pay his last respects to Kiki. While he does so, he takes off his hat and places it on Kiki's body, showing he's no longer afraid of searching for the truth. After noting one last piece of evidence, Shuichi meets up with everyone else and the Class Trial begins.

During the trial, Shuichi figures out that Kiki died from falling down the stairs from the Fifth Floor to the First Floor. Throughout all the floors, evidence have been scattered about to implicate the others for the murder. Shuichi's able to link all the placed evidence as all being gifts that everyone gave Kiki (Keebo's wrench, Tsumugi's copy of Inuyasha, Kirumi's spatula, Ryoma's old tennis ball, and Gonta's butterfly net). He eventually figures that Sokyu had to be responsible since the two of them were the only ones that didn't give Kiki a gift and a ring that Sokyu wears was found in Kiki's hand.

Voting Time occurs and Monokuma confirms that Sokyu killed Kiki. Sokyu reveals that the reason he killed Kiki went as far back as the Motive Video, which Monokuma shows to everyone. Doing so reveals that Sokyu's last name is "Akafuku" and that he's related to Jutaro Akafuku, a criminal that Makoto and Kyoko helped apprehend during their time at Hope's Peak. Sokyu reveals that the times that Monokuma talked to him alone was the bear confirming his heritage and that both Jutaro and Shutaro Akafuku, Jutaro's brother and Sokyu's father, tried to get Makoto and Kyoko killed. When he tried to reconcile with that information, he was met by Kiki who tried to help him. During this, Kiki discovered that Sokyu had his secret given to him by Monokuma. Fearing that Kiki would want revenge for what his father and uncle tried to do to her parents, Sokyu pushed her down the stairs to her death. As Sokyu's about to be executed, a surprise guest appears in the trial grounds: Kiki. Due to the rules, Sokyu is spared from execution as he actually didn't kill Kiki. The group then takes the heavily injured girl the Nurse's Room to patch her up.

At the Nurse's Office, Kiki reveals that when she was pushed down the stairs, she was nearing death when she hears mysterious voices encouraging her to live. Afterwards, she willed herself to the trial ground in order to stop Sokyu from being falsely executed. Everyone reveals Kiki's last name to her and guesses that she might be the redacted girl in "The Second Tragedy That Almost Was". Kiki then asks to talk to Sokyu, who's outside of the room and blocked by Gonta and Ryoma, where she forgives him due to her understanding that he isn't truly a bad person. Kiki's then taken back to her room while Shuichi stays to watch over her, the two eventually sleeping in the same bed when the former starts suffering from nightmares.

Meanwhile, the mastermind gets furious over Kiki's survival, though they calm down as they're sure this development will cause more people to watch and want more of the Killing Game. The mastermind reveals that they're working for a group called Team Danganronpa.

    Chapter Six: Goodbye Danganronpa!
While she eats breakfast and recovers from her injuries, Kiki asks Shuichi what would have happened if she had arrived to the trial grounds after Sokyu had been executed. Shuichi notes how it would mean that Monokuma would have broken the "only the blackened is executed" rule and that the mastermind would likely have to end the Killing Game if they're proven wrong. Kiki then suggests that they prove that Monokuma made a wrong call, suggesting Kaede due to the pianist not being in the same room as Rantaro when he died unlike the other culprits. Kiki and Shuichi head to the gym to confront Monokuma on this incorrect call and say that they can prove in one last Class Trial. Monokuma agrees to it on the condition that they also solve all the mysteries behind Kibou Academy or else everyone will be executed. After Kiki and Shuichi reconvene with the rest of the survivors and inform them of their deal with Monokuma, the group agree to work together in investigating in order to end the Killing Game.

In the spirit of fairness, Monokuma unlocks all of the rooms in the academy. Everyone splits up to cover more ground: Tsumugi and Ryoma search the Data Room, Kirumi and Keebo search the Bio Lab, Sokyu and Gonta search the Headmaster's Office, and Shuichi and Kiki search Rantaro's room.

While in Rantaro's room, Kiki and Shuichi find a laptop with a video revealing that Rantaro seemingly wanted the Killing Game to happen and gotten a perk for willingly participating. Afterwards, the two meet with Kirumi and Keebo in the Bio Lab which doubles as a morgue for the deceased participants. Found amongst Teruaki's remains, the four find an obituary that confirms that Teruaki actually died during the Second Nonary Game. As they leave the Bio Lab, Kiki and Shuichi stay behind to pay their respects for the deceased Kaede.

Meeting with Gonta and Sokyu in the Headmaster's Office, the four find a folder with plans for building Monokuma and creating the Killing Game with Akki's name on it as well as a folder from Team Danganronpa containing a map of Kibou Academy and profile pages of all the participants sans Teruaki. Kiki and Shuichi then meet with Tsumugi and Ryoma in the Data Room where all the footage from the security cameras go to and discover a conveyer belt that makes copies of Monokuma when the mastermind touches the fingerprint scanner connected to it. While catching her breath, Kiki accidentally falls into a trap door in the wall and into a secret elevator that brings her into a mysterious room. She manages to find the exit, which is revealed to be the hidden door in the library. Reuniting with the others in the Data Room, Kiki and Shuichi head to the secret room together in the hidden elevator, discovering that the elevator can move anywhere inside of Kibou Academy.

The two investigate the secret room and discover several tubes that were used to erase all of their memories along with a journal showing that all of the participants were chosen because of, directly or indirectly, their connection to Hope's Peak (Kiki, Shuichi, Gonta, Kirumi, Keebo, Rantaro, Kaede, Ryoma, and Sokyu) and the Nonary Game (Ace, Snake, Clover, Lotus, and Teruaki). The journal also confirms that the Teruaki that participated in the Killing Game was a fake and that the mastermind purposely tried to get Kaede and Kiki killed due to their ability to keep the group together. Eventually, Monokuma calls everyone to the trial grounds for the last Class Trial.

Meanwhile, the unnamed detective, Tenko, Kokichi, and Miu arrive outside of Kibou Academy. Using Miu's inventions, the group are able to break the academy's security systems and begin breaching the building.

At the Class Trial, Kiki and Shuichi declare that they wish to retry the case of Rantaro's murder to prove that Monokuma falsely declared Kaede to be the blackened. The two are able to reveal that Kaede's trap actually failed to kill Rantaro. Using the hidden elevator, the mastermind was able to make their way to the library unnoticed and killed Rantaro with their own shot put ball. Afterwards, they swapped the ball with the one Kaede used at the scene to make it look like her trap worked, took Rantaro's Willing Participant Monopad, and retreated to their hidden room. Because of this, it proves that the mastermind broke their own rules and falsely convicted Kaede for the murder. Kiki and Shuichi then claim the mastermind is actually Tsumugi, who denies it and says it's actually Junko. When everyone points out that she's dead, Tsumugi begins cosplaying as Junko (calling herself Junko Enoshima the 4th) and claims to be her, though that's quickly disproven.

Tsumugi reveals that she tampered with everyone's memories and falsified their Motive Videos. She also reveals that the Killing Game is being broadcasted for the entire world to see as the trial grounds become littered with live footage of the audience watching, including Maki and the Naegis. Tsumugi then explains that she and Team Danganronpa, along with a willing Rantaro, created the Killing Game to create entertainment for the outside world after getting inspired by Akki's attempt to create a second Tragedy. She also admits that the Teruaki they knew was simply an actor she hired to play the deceased man due to her and Team Danganronpa being unable to find the rest of the survivors of the Second Nonary Game (Junpei, Akane Kurashiki, and Aoi Kurashiki). Tsumugi then claims that the survivors are just fictional characters that she made for the Killing Game. Kiki tries to deny this, but Tsumugi claims that due to her controlling everything that the survivors had learned, there's no way they can deny her claims. This causes everyone to fall into despair.

Inside of her mind, Kiki is met by Kaito Momota (one of her former babysitters and Maki's deceased husband) who's able to help her remember both himself and Maki. Before he leaves, he gives her a pep talk and tells her that some other people can help her regain her memories. Kiki's then met with her grandfather Jin Kirigiri, who helps her regain the rest of her memories. The two are soon joined be the deceased members of Class 78 (Sayaka Maizono, Leon Kuwata, Chihiro Fujisaki, Mondo Owada, Kiyotaka Ishimaru, Hifumi Yamada, Celestia Ludenberg/Taeko Yasuhiro, and Sakura Ogami) who reveal that they were the mysterious voices she heard during her near-death experience. They try to encourage Kiki to keep fighting to no avail. Suddenly, everyone's greeted by the real Junko Enoshima and her sister Mukuro Ikusaba, the latter of which tried and failed the stop the former. Surprisingly, Junko convinces Kiki to defeat Tsumugi before leaving. This, combined with hearing the voices of her family and former babysitter, allows Kiki to break out of her own despair to confront her former friend.

Like her father during the Killing School Life, Kiki helps rouse her fellow survivors out of their despair by helping them remember who they are. The survivors then say that they're done with the battle between hope and despair and decide to end Danganronpa by refusing to participate, even when Tsumugi threatens to have them all executed for voting. After Kiki and Shuichi get into one last Argument Armament with Tsumugi, they and the rest of the survivors convince the audience to stop watching the Killing Game. After the audience shut their devices off and stop watching, Tsumugi tries to get herself and the survivors executed as she finds no point in living in a world without Killing Games. Before Monokuma can call for Punishment Time, the bear suddenly shut down as the police force arrive to arrest Tsumugi. As Tsumugi's getting arrested, the unnamed detective is revealed to be Kyoko's old partner Yui Sumidare as she helps escort the survivors out of the building.

    Epilogue: Finally Free!
After getting patched up by former Ultimate Nurse Mikan Tsumiki, the survivors are finally freed from Kibou Academy. As Miu grabs Keebo and takes him back home, Yui offers to drop everyone else off to their homes, though she does tell Ryoma that he will have to go back to jail for his crimes. The survivors all agree to stay in contact with each other. As everyone sans Keebo ride in Yui's car, they all take a quick rest as the detective drives everyone home.
