The Inspired (2/2)

Directed by Larry Teng
Written by Breen Frazier
Morgan: "We are not only our brother's keeper, in countless large and small ways we are our brother's maker." Bonaro Overstreet.
The guy they arrested in the previous episode, Jesse, has the wrong fingerprints to be the UnSub. The BAU wonder if he replaced his brother Wallace deliberately, as he uncovered the adoption records a year ago. He didn't, but when his psychotic brother shows up at his house, he's curious about the serial killer lifestyle. The BAU tracks their biological parents down and the father helps them tell which is which.

Tropes in this episode

  • Antagonist Title: Jesse is the "Inspired" being inspired to kill by his brother's crimes.
  • Evil Twin: Subverted. At first it looks like Wallace is the evil twin, but his brother is just as bad. If anything, it's a case of Evil Twin and Crazy Twin.
  • It's All About Me: Claudia feels like her role as a mother didn't focus sufficiently on her, and she is resentful about it.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: Rossi does this deliberately when Alex asks what the odds were that the UnSub would be an identical twin (about 0.35%), because Reid did this trope earlier when Rossi asked the same rhetorical question.
  • Sadistic Choice: The twins' narcissistic mother gave herself one when she decided to give up one of them for adoption.
  • Something Only They Would Say: Unintentional on the UnSubs' part, but the twins' father identifies the surviving twin by noting that he has the same tic as himself, which only one twin adopted.

Hotchner: "They mess you up, your Mom and Dad. They may not mean to, but they do. They fill you with the faults they had. And add some extra, just for you." Philip Larkin.
