Tropes:

  • Asshole Victim: Subverted with the victim, Jay Dratton. While he initially comes off as an angry jerkass that absolutely no one was upset over the death of, he's shown to have been a good man at one point before being consumed by work and anger, and returned to being that as he neared closer and closer to death's door. It's ultimately why his wife Caroline agreed to give him a Mercy Kill rather than let him suffer. They, his wife Caroline, his son Tommy and the woman who gave him the morphine, Amelia Flores, remember him quite fondly despite pretending he was this trope.
  • Embarrassing Tattoo: In 1998, Tommy has one on his neck.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Caroline's hair is in severe updos in all of the flashbacks, but loose and wavy in the present day, representing her shift from uptight and unhappy Rich Bitch to a far more relaxed woman.
  • Jerkass Realisation: Jay gradually gets one over the course of the episode but died before making good amends. All he can do is to ask his wife before he died is to remember him for the good man he was and not the one he has become.
  • Mercy Kill: A nurse admits to mercy-killing six patients. However this is a Red Herring as he did not kill Jay due to his strong will to fight cancer. Instead Jay was euthanized by his wife upon his request.
  • Not Me This Time: The nurse denies killing Jay as he only targeted patients beyond help and Jay was determined to fight to the end. He points out he's already happily confessed to killing six people, so why would he deny a seventh?
  • No Place for Me There: An afterlife variant, after his Jerkass Realisation, Jay did not believe that he will go to the same place as Amelia's daughter after he dies.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: Caroline's severe dark suits in the flashbacks give way to comfortable jeans and shirts im the present day, indicating her more relaxed personality.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: On his deathbed, Jay befriends a poor woman, Amelia Flores, whose daughter died and paid for her treatment and funeral, and reconciles with his estranged wife Caroline and son Tommy with the happy memories they had.
  • Tragic Keepsake: In the present day, Amelia still have the present Jay gives her in memory of her daughter (which he befriends before they both died) attached on her doorstep : a butterfly-themed decorative chime.
  • Who's Laughing Now?: The episode starts with Jay, as the new corporate executive, giving each of his former bosses who were now under him "The Reason You Suck" Speech before giving them the boot.
