- All for Nothing: Blaine stole Matt's $3000 casino winnings from his corpse and used it for flying lessons. Turns out that it doesn't cover the fee for a pilot's license, ending another one of his get-rich-quick schemes.
- Cain and Abel: Blaine was the Cain to Matt's Abel. Matt was able to clean himself up and got a high-paying job, while Blaine never did and continued to gamble and get into criminal schemes. Matt's refusal to participate in one of Blaine's heists got him killed.
- Compulsive Liar: Blaine talks big about making it rich to both Matt and his sister Katie. Too bad he has no business plan besides gambling and pulling off robberies. He lied to Matt about a new investment when he actually plans to rob the casino, and he lied to Katie about being a pilot with investments in a nightclub.
- Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Matt reformed his former petty criminal behavior, and when Blaine straight up confesses that he wants to rob the casino, Matt threatens to tell security. Blaine took this as an insult and kills Matt for it.
- False Confession: Ivan the shopkeeper confesses to Matt's murder, after Scotty threatens to make him "disappear". He thought that Philly PD would have similar powers to the KGB.
- Non-Idle Rich: Discussed. Scotty says that he won't retire even if he wins the lottery.
- Red Herring: Two people were initially suspected of Matt's murder. A Serial Killer truck driver who is later found guilty of two unrelated murders, and a Russian shopkeeper who was traumatized by young Matt robbing him, and ran into him years later. Blaine was not a suspect until the third act.
