Recap / Chuck S 2 E 01 Chuck Vs The First Date

Go To

You know, I still have an awful lot of secrets in my head. The Lindberg baby, the formula for New Coke...
-Chuck

Team Chuck recover a cypher from a merc called Colt. During their debrief, General Beckman makes an announcement: the cypher the team recovered is the final component for the new Intersect, which will go online the next night. For Chuck, this means his time as a spy is almost over and he'll soon be a free man. For Casey, this means he'll soon have to follow his secret orders... to kill Chuck.

Anticipating freedom, Chuck asks Sarah on their first real date. While they're out, Casey hands over the cypher to an NSA courier, who turns out to be an impostor and almost kills Casey with poison. Meanwhile, Chuck and Sarah are accosted on their date by Colt, only to be rescued by a recovered Casey driving his Crown Victoria into the restaurant.

Next day, Chuck flashes on Casey's scar where Colt hit him: the imprint of his ring identifies the mercs' organisation and likely hideout. While Sarah and Casey take a team to check it out, Chuck answers a Nerd Herd call that turns out to be a trap by Colt, who intends to kill him. However, Chuck manages to use Morgan's Call of Duty plan to bluff Colt and his men long enough to grab the cypher and run. Chased down by Colt, Chuck is rescued by Sarah and Casey and their team. Colt is arrested, and the cypher recovered again.

With the new Intersect back on track, Chuck arranges for a do-over date with Sarah at his apartment, and Casey plans his mission to kill Chuck. Meanwhile, CIA Director Graham activates the new Intersect... which explodes, having been booby-trapped by Fulcrum.

With Graham dead and no new Intersect the hit is off, and Chuck is stuck with the CIA for the foreseeable future. Surely nothing can make this better? Enter Morgan, with a plan to buy 90 Twinkies for Jeff to eat in a bet. He could die!

Trope Flash:

  • Chekhov's Gun: Morgan's highly-detailed plan for a Call of Duty assault comes in handy when Chuck needs to bluff Colt that he's surrounded.
Morgan: Alright, listen up, here are the specs. Are you ready? 23 infantry troopers, 16 snippers, 7 heavy gunners, 4 demolition experts, and enough ammunition to orbit Arnold Schwarzenegger, 50 gamers, one call, all ready for battle. With this team assembled and my plan I think we can beat them.
  • Did Not Think This Through: Surely, the plan to kill Chuck could wait until after the new Intersect is up and running? Fortunately, Sarah comes by with news of the explosion before Chuck gets shot.
  • He Knows Too Much: Chuck gets this twice.
    • First, Colt lures him out to kill him because Chuck can identify him and therefore has to die.
    • The CIA and NSA order Casey to kill Chuck, because they can't have a civilian running around with a head full of secrets.
  • High-Altitude Interrogation: The episode opens on Chuck being dangled out of a window by Colt. Later, he gets dangled off a roof.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Chuck, when he starts flashing on random people at the restaurant and realises he and Sarah are surrounded.
    • Casey admits to having a bad feeling when the mercs' hideout is empty. Sure enough...
    • Chuck again, when he goes on his Nerd Herd call to find he's been lured into Colt's trap.
    • Graham, briefly, moments before the new Intersect blows up with him in it.
  • Scary Black Man: Colt, and how. Being played by Michael Clarke Duncan helps.
Colt: I was hoping you would find me imposing. Go ahead, you can be honest: I was going for imposing.
    Chuck Good job.
  • Shout-Out: Morgan's method of choosing a new Assistant Manager.
Morgan: Welcome to Thunderdome! It is the ancient way! To the victor go the spoils! One of them will be the new assistant manager and one of them will be Jeff! The fates will decide!
  • Trojan Horse: The cypher is rigged somehow to blow up the Intersect when activated.
  • Wham Shot: As the cypher is engaged and the new Intersect powers up, the following appears on the screen:
    FULCRUM THANKS YOU.
