Tropes

  • Comical Overreacting: Calvin is told to clean his room by his mom, and Calvin's reaction is to secede from the family and move to the Yukon.
  • Halfway Plot Switch: The first couple weeks worth of strips related to the arc involve Calvin and Hobbes seceding from the family to go live in the Yukon. When their journey is almost immediately derailed by Hobbes's mutiny and Calvin returns home, the remainder of the arc revolves around Calvin's panic on realizing that Hobbes didn't get home, and Calvin's dad having to find him in the woods.
  • The Mutiny: The journey to the Yukon quickly goes off the rails when Hobbes objects to the meager food supplies that Calvin packed, as well as him having to be the one who carries the sled. Hobbes takes over as the leader of the expedition, which leads to Calvin going back home.
  • Parental Neglect: Calvin's mom seems completely indifferent about him running away to live in the Yukon. Averted in that she knows that Calvin won't be able to get very far before returning and that his secession will ultimately not be any different than a typical day of play for him, since he plays in the woods frequently.
  • The Runaway: Calvin secedes from his family and plans to run away to the Yukon with Hobbes. Calvin is entirely upfront about his intentions to his mom, and she's perfectly fine with him going through with it, knowing that he won't be able to get very far and will inevitably come back.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: After their argument, Calvin separates from Hobbes and returns home, figuring that Hobbes will eventually find his own way back. Of course, Hobbes is a stuffed animal who can't actually move on his own, so he stays where Calvin left him until Calvin's dad finds him.
