"The Lying Game" is the 14th episode of Season 3, and the 61st overall. It originally aired January 24, 2007.

Synopsis:

A drag queen is found dead in a hotel men's room. Another body is found in one of the city's salt trucks. Lindsay returns to Montana to testify in the case of a violent crime she witnessed as a teenager.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Defenestrate and Berate: The Cold Open sees a jilted boyfriend throwing his ex-girlfriend's belongings out of the window at her and her new boyfriend.
  • Fake Kill Scare: The last item the jilted boyfriend tosses down is the woman's pet dog. When the new boyfriend's legs are show covered in blood, the viewer is led to believe that the dog has just splattered on the sidewalk. The camera then pulls back to show the girl has safely caught her pet, and the blood has come from a passing truck that was spreading salt on the icy street.
  • Passed-Over Promotion: The perp in the second case kills his boss because he believes the man is going to promote someone else, but that he himself deserves it more.
  • Photo Op with the Dog: A politician just implicated in an unsolved sexual assault case immediately turns from the accusing officers and heads for a woman with a baby and photographers immediately start snapping photos.
  • Politicians Kiss Babies: The accused judge kisses a baby's rattle, which Det. Flack talks the mother into giving him so the team can obtain the man's DNA.
  • Trans Tribulations: The first victim is in the process of transitioning and faces persecution because of it.
  • Unsettling Gender-Reveal: The first murder is due to a violent reaction from someone the victim is hitting on in public. The guy being hit on is mortified to learn that the person he thought was a woman is actually a man.
