Recap / Black Books S 2 E 2 Fever

Go To

  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: "Chocolates and flowers and chocolate flowers".
  • Brutal Honesty: Applies to Bernard nearly all the time but he tells Fran she looks like she "just fell out of a tree".
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Bernard when women in sundresses enter the shop.
  • Fictional Disability: Manny's "Dave's syndrome".
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: Played with. Bernard's "summer girl" isn't one of these but he very much acts like she is, doing the sorts of things that these characters are supposed to inspire men to do (including "wearing an accordion" in one pathetic last attempt to win her over).
  • Mistaken for Romance: A woman who sees Fran napping in the bookshop thinks she's Bernard's girlfriend. Bernard responds by kicking Fran out of the shop so he won't look unavailable.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: The opening scene of Manny going to buy ice cream is played to look like a hard-boiled crime thriller.
  • Summer Romance: Bernard invokes this by declaring his intent to find a girlfriend just for the summer, whom he'll ditch in the autumn "because she's my summer girl."
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: Bernard asks Fran when the two will finally resolve it and get together. Fran says when at least one of them is dead.
  • You Do Not Want To Know: Said by Manny when Bernard asks what happens to him at 88 degrees. Thrown back at him by Bernard.
