Recap / Big Finish Torchwood SP 2 Torchwood Outbreak

Go To

A special 3 episode release featuring Captain Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones and Gwen Cooper in the same story.

Incubation - Prodromal - Invasion

A medical trial's gone terribly wrong, and one of the test subjects is loose on the streets of Cardiff. Within hours a virus is raging out of control and the bodies start piling up.

The Government scrambles to control the outbreak, but isn't too keen on anyone finding out the dark history of the virus. Captain Jack Harkness has encountered the infection before and knows that something alien is hiding inside it.

With the city sealed off and murderous mobs rampaging through the streets, Torchwood has to save something even more important than the human race.

Outbreak provides examples of:

  • Age Insecurity: Ianto, trying to threaten Norton, guesses that he's in his mid-to-late twenties and might still be alive in the present day. Nortorn is offended and objects that he's actually in his early twenties.
  • Body Horror: Patient zero ends up scratching his own skin off in his insanity.
  • Cold Open: The 3-part special opens with patient zero being apprehended and asking for Torchwood.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Ianto, as per usual.
Ianto: Our city’s under attack and I’m stuck in here with a homicidal maniac and a camp ghost, hate it when that happens.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: The Good Thinking project was meant to be a virus developed in the 1950s whose purpose was to identify problem citizens by focusing on their negative thoughts and "correct" their behavior. Unfortunately the virus went out of control and infected innocent people, causing an outbreak. It was so severe that 1950s Torchwood had to burn the infected alive.
  • Hallucinations: Jack has them at the start of part two. First is when he remembers being burned alive along with the other test subjects of Project Good Thinking. The second is when he hallucinates waking up in hospital after being burnt alive and talking to Norton.
  • Infectious Insanity
  • Kill It with Fire: How Norton gets rid of the test subjects of the original Project Good Thinking.
  • Kissing In A Tree: Norton sings a version of this as he follows Jack and Ianto around the Hub.
Norton: Jack and Ianto sitting in a tree, k-i-l-l-i-n-g!
  • Mind Virus: Cardiff is affected by a virus outbreak that causes hallucinations and madness.
  • Octopoid Aliens: The Torchwood team was introduced hunting down one of these on a speedboat... with Jack riding the creature like a horse.
