Mainline in: 1.1.1 and after
Created by: Eric J. Mesoy "Circon", Nils Kneuper "Ivanovic"

The peaceful village of Maghre is terrorized by a necromancer named Mordak. The only one in the village who can stand up against him is Baran the mage, but he knows that he needs more than some inexperienced peasants to fight off Mordak's undead. The only help he can muster is his brother Arvith and his group of horsemen. Arvith is still bitter about a past incident with Baran, but nothing can stop him from helping his brother.

This campaign provides examples of:

  • The Cameo: Kalenz is mentioned in the ending of the campaign, having hired Arvith's group as bodyguards. If the campaigns are played in order of difficulty, he ends up being an Early-Bird Cameo, as players don't meet Kalenz properly until Heir to the Throne.
  • Decoy Protagonist: Baran. He has all the signs of a protagonist, but you don't even get to control him until the last scenario.
  • Evil Plan: It turns out that Mordak's terror in Maghre is a ploy to root out Baran and deliver him to Tairach, an orcish warlord that wants revenge on him and whom the necromancers angered and need to appease.
  • Gondor Calls for Aid: Baran and Arvith have a pair of amulets for this situation. Baran uses it to call Arvith to help his plan to attack Mordak since he doesn't have enough men or battlefield skill, and Arvith comes even though he is not happy with Baran at the time.
  • Lower-Deck Episode: Most of "Battle for Wesnoth" campaigns end up either with historic moments, or setting up those historic moments for other campaigns. Not this one - this is just Arvith and Baran's story, and has very little bearing on overall story of Wesnoth.
  • Noob Cave: A campaign example (along with now demainlined An Orcish Incursion) - the campaign is short, easy and it's story is simplictic and has little bearing on overall story. It's pretty much intended to be played right after the tutorial.
  • Poor Communication Kills: In the second scenario, Arvith has to fight through an elvish patrol, who mistook kidnapped Baran for a necromancer. Had the elves been more reasonable, the battle could have been avoided.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: It's revealed that this is the reason Arvith is mad at Baran. During a battle against orcs at Toen Caric, Baran tried to attack the orcish warlord on his own, which succeeded in driving them off, but came at the cost of his men's lives, when Arvith already planned a tactic that could have achieved the same with less loss.
  • Scrapbook Story: While it uses the usual narration early on, most of the "narration" in the campaign comes in the form of excerpts from the journals of Baran, Arvith, and Mordak's brother Rotharik.
