Recap / Barney & The Backyard Gang E1 "The Backyard Show"

Go To

Michael and Amy want to do something special for their dad's birthday. At their mom's suggestion, they plan to put on a birthday show for him with the help of their friends (dubbed The Backyard Gang). With only hours before their dad gets home, the Backyard Gang soon doubts that their show will even get off the ground. Before their eyes, their friend Barney the Dinosaur magically comes to life. With Barney's help and their imaginations, the kids come up with several different acts for the show. In the end, the show is a resounding success, showing that anything is possible with a little imagination.

This video contains examples of:

  • Dance Party Ending: The kids all dance to "Hokey Pokey" while the end credits are rolling.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • The focus is initially placed on Michael and Amy's family, rather than the bond between Barney and the kids the series would be known for.
    • The kids try to hide Barney from Amy and Michael's mom, keeping his full-size form a secret. The other two videos have him disappear before their mom returns, while the rest of the franchise abandons this aspect completely.
  • Not-So-Forgotten Birthday: Early on, Michael and Amy's dad laments that he has to play golf on this particular Saturday. Little does he know this is just so his wife and kids can throw a Surprise Party for him. By the end, he's pleased to find out they didn't forget his birthday after all.
  • Pilot Episode: Along with "Three Wishes" and "A Day at the Beach," this is the pilot to the whole Barney franchise, introducing the gang and the titular purple dinosaur.
  • Public Domain Soundtrack: The majority of the songs used in the video are in the public domain. (The only one that isn't, at least in the US, is "Hokey Pokey".)
  • Surprise Party: The plot of the video revolves around Michael and Amy throwing one for their dad.
