Tropes:

  • Back for the Dead: Samuel and Daz reappear in this episode and end up killed by the end.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Armin, after a shot from Samuel pierces his jaw.
  • Boom, Headshot!: How Daz, Samuel, and other yeagerists die.
    • Averted with Armin, who is shot three times, with one of the bullets hitting him through his jaw, but survives because of his Titan power giving him a Healing Factor and Nigh-Invulnerability.
  • Call-Back: Annie's methods to kill many members of the Yeagerist faction resemble the tactics she used to take down many members of the Survey Corps during the Female Titan arc.
  • Defiant to the End: Subverted because she doesn't actually die, but Lady Azumabito charges at Floch when he's about to kill her saying she won't die without putting up a fight.
  • Heel Realization: Magath realizes that he was wrong for thinking Eldians deserved their fate because of the things their ancestors did.
  • History Repeats: While not explicitly stated, two characters briefly touch this theme:
    • Magath implies that he believes that Eren, by destroying the entire world and erasing it's history, is condemning the people that will remain after the Rumbling to eventually commit the same mistakes from the past, and he wants to preserve the world's history and pass it to future generations, as bloody and horrible as it was.
    • Kiyomi tells Floch that he probably shouldn't be too happy about the Rumbling happening, as once the outside threats to Paradis Island are eliminated, the island's population would end up so divided the bloodshed would only continue after that.
  • Perspective Flip: The Armored Titan and Female Titan are slaughtering Scouts as they did back in Season One, but this time our main cast is in support of this.
  • Skyward Scream: The episode ends with Connie giving one of these after killing Samuel and Daz.
  • Tears of Remorse: Samuel clearly doesn't want to kill Connie and cries over it, but he knows he can't let Armin and Connie take the airship to stop Eren. Whether or not he actually would have gone through with it (he shoots Armin, but Armin could recover and they all know that) is unclear, as Connie doesn't take the chance and takes the gun to shoot him dead.
  • You Wouldn't Shoot Me: Unable to speak after being shot in the mouth, Armin is forced to plead in silence with a hesitant Daz holding a gun to his forehead.
