Basic Trope: A creature that gives live birth... Except that, according to (Earthen) biology's rules, it shouldn't be supposed to do so!

  • Straight: Shelly the Turtle gets pregnant and gives live birth to baby turtles.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Every single animal on planet Earth gives live birth!
    • Pokey, a male turtle, gives live birth.
    • Carlos, a male car gives live birth.
  • Downplayed:
    • Right after Shelly's mother got pregnant with Shelly, she was immediately born.
    • A snake incubates its eggs and gives the appearance of live birth.
  • Justified:
    • Due to genetic engineering, Shelly's reproduction system causes her to give live birth instead of laying eggs.
    • Shelly is from a planet where turtles actually do give live birth.
    • Shelly is a reptile that is ovoviviparous.
    • Shelly is a humanoid-bodied Funny Animal (which may even border on Beast Man), and therefore has humanlike biology and can reproduce like a human.
  • Inverted: Whale Egg
  • Subverted:
    • Turns out, that her baby bump was actually a Balloon Belly that Shelly gained.
    • Shelly tries to give live birth.
  • Double Subverted:
    • However, she ends up getting pregnant afterwards.
    • Once Shelly was just about to give up, she successfully gave birth.
  • Parodied:
    • Shelly gets pregnant and instantly gets pregnant with a bunch of babies.
    • Carlos the car gets pregnant from Serena the smartphone.
  • Zig Zagged: Shelly's baby bump turns out to be a Balloon Belly, which later goes away. She tries to get pregnant for real, but fails.
  • Averted: Shelly lays an egg.
  • Enforced:
    • "We need to a way to show that these anthropomorphic animals act like humans" "I know! A turtle who gets pregnant!"
    • The show uses Hollywood Science as a Running Gag.
  • Lampshaded: "Yes, I really gave birth to this turtle." "That's impossible." "I know. I did it anyway."
  • Exploited: Shelly becomes a Pregnant Badass.
  • Discussed: "...and she gave birth to that turtle!" "Really?"
  • Conversed: "I'm puzzled. Why does Shelly give live birth when her species should lay eggs?"
  • Plotted A Good Waste: "Hey! If our character gets pregnant, a fanbase will arrive for her. It is usually unexpected, but...!"
  • Played For Laughs:
    • Shelly can give birth to anything that can make the audience laugh.
    • Shelly gets pregnant, and experiences human-like pregnancy symptoms.
  • Played For Drama:
    • Shelly has an abortion.
    • Shelly's baby is born prematurely.
