Go To

Basic Trope: A character learns that it's okay to make mistakes.

  • Straight: Bob gets a maneuver wrong in sword-fighting class. He's ashamed, but Alice reminds him every learner is allowed a few mistakes along the way to mastery.
  • Exaggerated: Bob gets a maneuver wrong in sword-fighting class. He prepares to commit suicide so he can never make another mistake, but Alice talks him down, saying that everyone makes mistakes.
  • Downplayed: Bob's sword-fighting is mostly fine, but his form is a little off, which he feels bad about. Alice informs him that that's the point of training, to perfect your form until it's become muscle memory.
  • Justified:
    • Bob has anxiety, which causes him to panic more frequently.
    • Bob has perfectionist tendencies and fixates on errors, which hinders his performance going forward.
    • Bob borrows his family's expensive car without their permission, but has an accident that leaves him in a wheelchair and renders the car unusable. He believes that he messed up too badly to be forgiven for it, and believes his life is ruined due to his newfound disability. His family acknowledges that he made a mistake, but are relieved he's still alive and remind him that even after massive mess-ups like this, he can still find happiness in life.
  • Inverted:
    • Bob is severely punished for his error and ends up internalizing a lesson that he must not make mistakes, lest they come back to bite him.
    • Bob is a dealer in earth-shattering explosives. His careless error causes the Earth to go boom.
    • Bob is a neurosurgeon. His mistake may not have ended the world as such, but try telling that to the patient and their family.
  • Subverted: Bob gets a maneuver wrong in sword-fighting class. Alice comes over, looking like she's going to reassure him...and then she yells at him for making the mistake.
  • Double Subverted: ...However, she did that as a Batman Gambit to make Bob react with indignation and admit to himself that it's okay to make mistakes.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • No one makes mistakes in the story.
    • The fact Bob screwed up in any way, shape or form is never pointed out to the degree this Trope does.
  • Enforced: The author wants his readers to understand this Aesop.
  • Lampshaded:
Alice: So you made a little mistake. Everyone's a work in progress.
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied:
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
