Basic Trope: A character is prevented from swearing due to a magical spell or other in-universe filter.
- Straight:
- Bob tries to swear, but due to a spell, the swear words are changed to similar-sounding but inoffensive words (e.g. fuck is changed to "fork", shit is changed to "shirt", etc).
- The spell replaces swear words with Sound Effect Bleeps.
- The in-universe filter changes swear words to "Gosh Dang It to Heck!"-type words.
- Exaggerated: The in-universe filter even censors exclamations, minced oaths, and words that are considered mildly impolite at worst.
- Downplayed:
- The filter only censors harsh profanity or discriminatory language.
- The filter still lets Bob swear, but changes the stronger words to milder profanity (e.g. changing shit to "crap", changing "goddamn" to just "damn", etc).
- Justified:
- The story is told from the perspective of someone applying a Narrative Profanity Filter.
- Bob is in a simulation of some kind in which he's not allowed to swear.
- Inverted: The in-universe filter censors everything except swear words.

- Zig-Zagged: The in-universe filter has a *Bleep*-dammit! approach to censoring words — for instance, it only censors part of a swear word, or censors some swear words while leaving others untouched.
