Basic Trope: Handicapping oneself during training for better results.

  • Straight: Billy's Brawlin' Gym has its members wear weighted clothing in order for them to build up explosive twitch muscles that helps them become as strong and fast as freight trains. Special mention has to go to Flash Young; He wears 150 kilo clothes every single time he's training, even during the summer.
  • Exaggerated: Billy's Brawlin' Gym puts its members at such extreme handicaps that once those are off, they practically become superhuman.
  • Downplayed: The handicaps are only limited to weights around the limbs, and they get somewhat better results than training fairly.
  • Justified: It's not enough to train fairly, and as such, they need to be at disadvantages so that once they're in the real thing, it's way easier.
  • Inverted: Billy's Brawlin' Gym instead puts its members at advantages. It's surprisingly effective.
  • Subverted: ???
  • Double Subverted: ???
  • Parodied: The handicaps are comically extreme; Like squaring up with multiple wild animals at once.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Billy's Brawlin' Gym does nothing of the sort.
  • Enforced: Truth in Television.
  • Lampshaded: Flash cheerfully remarks, "Can't do wrong with wearin' weighted clothing all the time!"
  • Invoked: Flash complains that his exercises are getting too easy; Billy responds by handicapping him severely.
  • Exploited: Since everyone else trains naturally and fairly, Billy's Brawlin' Gym resorts to this to give them the extra edge while they still have time before the rest catches on.
  • Defied: Billy refuses to risk injuring his boxers by imposing handicaps.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
