Basic Trope: A character does or says something in a flashback that will be contradicted through future events.
- Straight: Bob is afraid of tigers. At some point there's a flashback to when he was younger and in a circus, and sets free an abused tiger with no problems.
- Exaggerated:
- Bob is a cynical, volatile, solitary character and hates tigers. In a flashback we see Bob was a happy, friendly, naive keet type who adored tigers and helped free one from a circus with his friends. Then all his friends turned against him and sicced a tiger on him while laughing and pointing as the tiger attacked, turning him into present day Bob.
- In the flashback, we see that everyone behaved in the exact opposite way that they do now.
- Downplayed: Bob dislikes tigers. In a flashback, he pets one.
- Justified: There was an incident that radically changed Bob's view of tigers between the time the flashback took place and the present.
- Inverted: The characters act surprised when Bob acts the same way towards tigers in the flashback.
- Subverted: The flashback begins with Bob stating how cool he thinks tigers are...then it turns out that he was being sarcastic or lying.
- Double Subverted:Bob: I didn't just love tigers...I was...Young Bob: A SUPER TIGER FAN!
- Parodied: ???
- Zig Zagged: The flashback shows young Bob freeing the tiger, then running away, then walking up to pet it, then...
- Averted: The flashbacks are consistent with Bob's opinion on tigers.
- Enforced: Bob's fear of tigers has become a meme in the fanbase, so the producers decide to shove in a contradictory flashback to mess with them.
- Lampshaded: "Wait...You used to like tigers?"
- Invoked: A character asks Bob if he ever liked tigers.
