Go To

Basic Trope: Feathered dinosaurs are portrayed as goofy-looking and harmless.

  • Straight: The feathered Velociraptor is fluffy, tries to fly, and is friendly.
  • Exaggerated: All feathered dinosaurs, avian or not, are pink, cluck like chickens, and do not kill anything.
  • Downplayed: The Velociraptor is sometimes used for comic relief, but is mostly played for horror.
  • Justified:
    • The Velociraptor is domesticated, and was bred for companionship.
    • The Velociraptor was genetically modified to make feathered dinosaurs look goofy.
  • Inverted: Feathered dinosaurs are swift, agile, and deadly, while the featherless dinosaurs are cold-blooded, sluggish, and lazy.
  • Subverted:
  • Double Subverted: The feathered Velociraptor is laughed at, but then pounces on one of the humans. It then turns out that it is only licking the human playfully.
  • Parodied: A scaly Velociraptor that did not kill anyone is considered the most feared dinosaur, but another, feathered Velociraptor that has killed 1,000 people is still seen as a harmless laughing stock.
  • Zig Zagged: Some of the feathered dinosaurs are fluffy and silly, but others are dangerous.
  • Enforced:
    • The Velociraptor was originally going to be a villain, but the director demanded that it be changed to a comic relief character.
    • The work was created by people that dislike feathered dinosaurs, and the work was created to make feathered dinosaurs look stupid.
  • Lampshaded: "If the dinosaurs have feathers, they're harmless. If it has scales, run. Don't ask me why the dinosaurs are like that."
  • Invoked: The Velociraptor was genetically modified to make feathered dinosaurs look goofy.
  • Exploited: Bob uses the feathered Velociraptors to attack Alice, knowing that the feathers will make them be underestimated.
  • Defied: Bob tells Alice to stop laughing at the feathered Velociraptors.
  • Discussed: "I don't care if it has feathers. It's still a dangerous creature that we need to be careful around!"'
  • Conversed: "So I'm watching a show with a feathered dinosaur, and you guessed it, the feathered dinosaur was goofy."
  • Deconstructed: A lab-raised population of genetically-reconstructed (and authentically feathered) Velociraptors escape into the wild and are allowed to become a dangerous invasive species, preying upon domestic pets and livestock as well as competing with native predators, simply because nobody takes them seriously enough as a threat to bother re-containing them.
  • Reconstructed: Dinosaurs are more similar to modern animals (and specifically birds) than we once believed them to be, and that includes both having feathers and displaying the silly quirks we see in modern birds. Feathered dinosaurs are still competent predators, but they're also silly, and that makes them more realistic.
