Basic Trope: An item of eyewear has a special function instead of, or in addition to, correcting eyesight.

  • Straight: Charlie has sunglasses that can project holograms.
  • Exaggerated: The sunglasses can then manifest the holograms as real objects, effectively making their wearer a Reality Warper.
  • Downplayed: The sunglasses are red-tinted to improve low-light vision.
  • Justified: Adding an additional function helps offset the additional liability of being dependent on wearing glasses.
  • Inverted: Goggles Do Nothing
  • Subverted: Charlie's sunglasses are said to be able to project holograms, but he was just making that up to make himself look cool.
  • Double Subverted: ...Because the heat vision function doesn't look nearly as flashy.
  • Parodied: Wearing glasses is the setting's standard way of gaining superpowers.
  • Zig Zagged: Whether Charlie's sunglasses can project holograms depends on which form he's in. The energy from his superhero form powers the sunglasses, so they're purely cosmetic in his civilian form.
  • Averted: Charlie's sunglasses don't do anything spectacular.
  • Enforced: The author strongly adheres to Law of Conservation of Detail, so every accessory the characters wear must have some sort of function and/or narrative purpose. This author leans toward the former.
  • Lampshaded: "He's wearing stylish sunglasses. If they aren't just for show, then they probably have X-ray vision or something."
  • Invoked: Charlie designs/finds a very stylish-looking pair of sunglasses. He then tries to convince Velma to outfit them with a miniature hologram projector, banking on their slick design to win her over.
  • Exploited: Charlie starts a lucrative business outfitting heroes' stylish eyewear with advanced technology.
  • Defied: Remembering how expensive miniature hologram projectors are, Charlie concludes that eye protection is a good enough reason to wear the sunglasses.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Played For Laughs: Charlie's sunglasses have meat vision.
  • Deconstructed: The Heads-Up Display in Charlie's sunglasses strains and obstructs his vision from being so bright and close to his eyes.
  • Reconstructed:
    • Charlie replaces his organic eyes with cybernetic ones, making eye strain a non-issue.
    • The latest upgrade to the sunglasses includes a less obtrusive interface with dimmer lighting.
